Use ABY clutch on singelmass flyweel and move engine back.

    Paul,

Steve H showed me how to do it yesterday, apparently the bolt holes in the engine mounts are slotted, allowing a fair degree of adjustability so that the engine to be easily moved back. Problem is I dont think this will work for me because my 3 inch down pipe is a bit tight in there already and I am not sure if there is room to move it back a further 10mm. I need to get underneath and check the clearances.
So it 'seems' that it is all about moving the single mass 3B flywheel back so that it and the clutch, sit in the same place on the Gearbox shaft relative to the thicker dual mass FW.

You will need to delete the aluminium spacer to use the 3B clutch, you can either use the ABY friction plate, so the splines wouldn't matter (assuming they are different) or use the complete 3B clutch. The crank position pin is in the same place on both 3B and ABY setups, so no problems there. The needle bearing is the same again for both 3B and ABY, part number 034105313A. The CGR shaft is definitely shorter than the 016 transmission used in the type 85 Coupe q, I had a chunk of metal turned on a lathe and machined to extent the shaft for the 6 speed conversion on my type 85. The splines were different on type 85 016 tranny and CGR. I'm not sure what differences in spline there are between the 3B and ABY clutches.

The important thing to bear in mind is the distance between the release arm at rest and the transmission - to engine flange. Get the distance too large, and you will use 2 gallons of brake fluid and the system WILL NOT BLEED! The piston will burst out of the slave cylinder - it happened to me. The best way to check the distanct is to use a depth gauge through the slave cylinder hole. Check your stock set up, measuring from the hole to the release arm.

Well bu**er me - you do learn something everyday. Gotta wonder if it was deliberate or accidental that Audi allowed so much adjustment in the engine mounts.

Nice info from Siena BTW - If I was planning a monster conversion, I would go with a non Torsen 016 tranny so that is good info indeed !

When I was having the ur mapped at Dialynx, I mentioned to Kieth that I was thinking on putting a 6 speeder into the ur, he said I shouldn't bother as the non Torsen 016 is the better gearbox! he also said with the extra torque the extra gear would be usless.
That saved me a bit of time and money, I can now concentrate on the bigger turbo

My point exactly... as much as I love the 6 cogged 01E, it isn't the best choice for a monster conversion. The 016 in non-torsen form with the ability to lock the centre diff for 50:50 torque split makes for more fun and progressive driveability.

I wouldn't be the 1st to admit that getting any Torsen equipped quattro into repeatable, consistent, controlled progressive drifts of oversteer is a tricky business. I suspect I won't be the last either.

Not that I try it on every wet roundabout but you know what I mean...

Yeh right!!! like you avoid them like the plague
I believe Kieth also uses the same gearbox's in his Sport monster thingy, so they can handle HUGE power also

That 100 avant of ours uses the 016 non torsen box, and with 280hp it is pretty manic.
you certainly notice how shorter geared it is compaired to the S2,
                  2nd gear is just ridiculous:wacked:
lol....went for a blast round the local back lanes yesterday, some numpty in a new M3 thought he could burn me off,
mmm dont think so, how i chuckled.

Martin, if you want to 'lengthen the legs' of your RR Avant, you can use the 200 quattro turbo box > '87. Gearing is roughly 24.5 mph / 1000 RPM as opposed to your current setup which is the same as the type 85 Coupe quattro - 21.3 mph / 1000 RPM. 100 quattro 016 box is 4.11:1, while the 200 quattro 016 is 3.89:1.

Got one plus the rear diff off a '86 200 Avant, if you are interested? works perfectly, no noises. £100.00 you collect?

I'll have the box if Martin turns it down... Doubt I'll have room for it on the way back from the garage meet, but it might be an option.

I don't need the rear diff, just the 016 5-cog quattro box with its lockable centre diff.

May as well start this damned 'mid-life-crisis' project somewhere !

Sorry to hijack the thread buuut.

In my 20v coupe quattro first gear disappears very quickly and 2nd is too high to start off in. There is a bit of mangling noise when accelerating at low rpm in 2nd/3rd. At high speed there is a high pitched whining noise related to road speed and not RPM. the car has been like this since i got it with 7k miles. it has now done 23k miles and I wonder if the diff ( Torsen?) has died/been killed. I bought the car as a damaged repairable. Maybe the car was towed with just the back wheels on the ground? The car had an impact on the OSF taking off the bumper AC pump etc.

Is there a easy swap to a better gearbox? ( not sure what my code number is) I was offered a brand new 2.8 V6 quattro box. for £450 a while ago. I am changing from 205/60/15 on 6.5 x 15" to 205/55/16 on 7.5 x 16".

This may help the first gear problem but there is something not right with the noises. Pinion bearings?

                              David

I too am interested in a new tranny. I currently have a 93 s4, that i am stroking, and would like to put a better box in. Should i stay with the current plans of an rs2 6speed gear box, or use something else?
