    Where do I go now?

Right, I changed the cog on the dizzy on my 3b engined s2. I then timed up the engine to the marks that was shown in the posts on this site.

I went to start the engine but now the starter won't work, just clicks.
I get the exclamation mark come up but with no marks to say whats wrong.
I can't hear the fuel pump which IIRC I did before.
Did try to bump the car twice but would not start up, oil pressure did go up to 5 bar which was good.

Not sure where to go from here. Does the starter from say a 20v 7a fit the s2 or is the starter specific to the car?
How do I reset the ecu incase thats causing a problem?

Just want to get the car running again as I want to go to castle combe for the meet then the RR at westons. So any idea's would be very helpfull (and rewarded with copious amounts of beer when I meet up with you lot)

a clicking starter is usually as simple as a defective battery, obvious, but might just be that...
You probably wont hear the fuel pump, but easy way to check it, is remove the fuel pump relay in the fusebox (its the one with a fuse holder on it, without a fuse in it) and then simply bridge the large terminals in the fusebox, you should hear it running.
resetting the ECU is simply removing the fuses for a couple of minutes (I think its only 30 seconds , but to be sure) they are in the fusebox, under a cover that says "moteur / motor"
HTH, sorry dont know about 7a pump, etc...

I had some problems with the starter not turning before but that went away.
The battery was charged last night and was holding charge. It was also checked out and was fine. The guage inside says its got good charge.

If that the ecu registers a fault is there any way that it could stop the starter working?

It does sound like a flat battery. How many volts does the gauge show when you are trying to start it?

          12-13 ish IIRC.

The car was running fine till last monday when I was driving home from work and the rev's died, got the car home and it turned over but just would not start. Checked the rotor arm and that would not turn so checked the cog on the dizzy and it was flat on one side with missing teeth. This was changed yesterday and I done all the timing marks on it today (PITA btw) and then had the problems with the starter.

Sounds like 2 different problems, the non-working starter and then the dissy drive.

Does sound like a flat battery... does the starter click when you turn the key?? have you got another to check. If the voltage drops you will get alsorts of stange messages on the dash.

Try shorting the large lead/connector post on the starter (straight from the B+ on the battery) to the smaller lead (connector can be removed for this to make room for access to the connector post on the starter)... if alls ok you will gt a bit of a spark and (probably jump and bang your head lol!!!) the starter should turn over!

Just make sure she is out of gear first

Have you got a alarm fitted???

It has got an alarm fitted but don't think its wired into anything to do with that.

All it does when the starter is turned is just click, dash lights don't dim, guage stays where it should.

Just annoying me as I don't particuarly want to take it to dialynx to find out whats wrong as the bill would probably be huge, and if its something simple that I can do.

Try hitting the starter with a hammer. Worth a go and costs nothing.

Yeah thought about that, waiting for the rain to stop as well as its quite bad down here. Then going to have a go at finding it on the car lmao. Its that hidden.

I've found my trust tapping stick and given the starter a good seeing to by it. Makes a bit of a louder click and sometimes sounds like it trys to turn.

Tried bridging the connections to see if the starter would turn got the sparks but same noises and no starting. Think the starters a bit fooked.

Tried a different battery on the car and same results, on the plus side did find out that my mothers passat runs without a battery on

Quick question - does the starter off a 20v 7a fit these engines?

sure the main copper wire between the solenoid and starter is intact, mine had broken and sounds like the same as U are experiencing, i initially thought battery but turned out to be that had broken... S2 starter is an exhange item if you get the OEM bosch unit and about £100 IIRC

                            Good luck
