    ISV issue?

    Hi all,

Right.. ISV.. always going on me and dipping it in some IPF or whatever the liquid is called. that usual works for me, but I think ive reached my limit. Here's the scoop.

Idle started bouncing so I took ISV out, cleaned it, let it dry for half hour and poped it back in. everything seemed fine @ idle, but when i drove it gave me weired nudging feeling.. thats when i realised ive forgoten to plug in the actual plug to the ISV.

After plugging it up correctly, same issue with idle, revs drop, sometimes it cuts out. I see the revs drop almost to 0 rpm, then it recover's, shoots upto 2k rpm, and a puff of smoke pops out of the exhaust. Im worried as ive not had the puff of smoke before when my ISV was dirty.

Is it time to actually buy a new ISV? even after a clean its filthy and looking inside its all black. (if the answer is yes, how much are they from a good supplier like vagparts?)

It is likely that the ISV is causing the car to try to cut out, but the ISV may not be the reason since it will be driven from another sensor elsewhere which will actuate it.

mmmmm - if the ISV isn't moving quickly enough (its just a wee stepper motor) when the engine drops to idle (at junctions, lights etc) then it can cause this erratic idle - especially when car is not up to full temperature... The ECU does tricks like advancing ignition timing when the idle drops below normal range - thats partly what causes the blip whilst the ISV slows moves its *** to the right position and then it recovers.

My car is doing this ATM - does my head in - I too have been cleaning it with various things and trying to lube its internals but I think its time to buy a new one for me.

As a check before you commit to a new one - do the output tests from your ECU to make sure you can hear the ISV being cycled during test sequence. If you have it disconnected from pipework at this time you should be able to see the mechanism going from lock to lock - tis a good time to spray lube into the fing then if you aint tried that already.

PS - must check history on this topic - pretty sure that someone (Audiman ?) posted before that an ISV from 2.0 liter Astra (EcoTec engine) is much cheaper than our exotic beasty but is plug and play ! Shocking thought but its still a Bosch part AFAIK...

unless the bigger pipe does not cause hassle...

                      Paul,

What did you lube it with? wd40? Did you notice improvement after lubing it? Also any way to do the ECU test without vagcom ? Ive got the cable, ive got the laptop, ive got vagcom, it connencts to my engine but dosnt recognise it I think, im asked to select a tamplate (VW GOLF, AUDI a4 etc..)

                      Cheers
