I would always disconnect the battery. The closer you have the earth to what you are welding the better it will weld(mig) and less likely it is to earth anywhere else.

The earth clamp will be inches from the weld, but there is always the chance of injecting all sorts of noise and inducing volatge spikes into the chasis. I know even with pre-computerised injection cars you always had to disconnect the alternator as there was a risk of damaging the voltage control circuitry.
I am gonna take the safe than sorry route, as a few mins work could save me a few hundred quid!'93 S2 Coupe
