    water spray for intercooler

Having seen the power gains to be had of having cold water sprayed onto the intercooler on a couple of cars on the rollers i was thinking of rigging up some sort of water spray on mine.

As my avant has the headlight washers most of the work has been done for me as there are water pipes running infront of the intercooler, water can be had from the screenwash bottle, the seperate water pump for the headlight washers could simply be used to cool the intercooler via a push button switch on the dash.

What do people think? would it be worthwhile or of no real benefit and more for 1/4 mile use?

Seeing the gains at the weekend would be worthwhile doing that, just gotta work out how long the water would last, at the very least you will get marginal gains for the fact the bottles empty, so in a way you can't loose.

I think it is better to have someone cool it from the outside with a Carbon dioxide spray for the 1/4 mile. You can find it as electonic cleaning spray against dust. If you spay holding the button upsidedown then is plenty of CO2 is coming out. It is ca. -80 degrees Celcius.

Used on the WRX scoobies- only useful when you've been sitting in traffic for a while with the heat soak- they fitted it as the i/c is on top of the engine-A better laugh is to have a spray bar fitted in front of the i/c and linked to a CO2 bottle in the boot- open it and the i/c turns to ice - doesn't last long but gives ice cold charge-great for rolling road shootouts!!!!!!!!
If you fitted the waterspray you'd be spraying it all the time thinking it gives you an extra 20 horse-then stopping every 5 mins to fill the bottle!!!!!

To see if its a worthwhile gain for the road, block off the pipe for the screen jets and just use the wiper stalk to active the IC spray.
If you see enough gains to warrant it, then fit all the wiring for switches etc, otherwise just unblock the jets and return to normal.

Its worth noting that some drag strips like Pod dont really like IC spray bars as it drips on the track.
Ive seen people use them there at the start line and were then told to reverse off the strip and not run!

Yeah ive seen a 20 horse increase on the rollers in work spraying co2 on the i/c-the temperatures that big power turbo cars get to on a run is beserk. (600 hp skyline at full chat with the turbos going transparent and the laser temp tool showing 1700 deg c!!!) The cars doing 160 mph standing still with a 25 mph fan blowing on it!!

The reason for it on the rollers is that the air flow just isn't the same as on the road. It does work but there are plenty of theories on the air to IC to air system and how is best to operate it. Have a search of the forum ("intercooler spray" for example) as there are some good threads.

                Here for example...

Aquamist nozzles aren't too dear if you want a decent spray pattern, not sure if you'll have enough pressure though.

                    More search results
