    Turbo upgrade help

I was at Trax on sunday and got talking to a guy from a company called universal turbos. Said he'd reconed a few s2 turbo and upgraded a few. He said he would take my turbo and recon it phase 1 and it would be able to push 350bhp?
Sounded good to me and just what i'm looking for and the price was around £525

If anybody has delt with this company or has any advice i would be greatfull cheers Lee

He said he would use one side of the housing and put a bigger housing on the other so it would bolt straight back on?
I got a card so i'm going to ring him to get all the details. Just thought i'd see if anybody had used him before

@ Dan s2 coupe no he was driving a cosworth nearly as bad lol

Be real careful here - get them to specify EXACTLY what they will change in respect to housings (cold side or hot side) and the wheels fitted inside them.

To give you a rough comparison between S2 and RS2 turbo... They have same centre housing for lubrication & cooling. The external dimensions of the hotside are almost identical, but the hot side internal is different to take a larger turbine wheel. The cold side is visibly bigger on the RS2 and it also houses a larger compressor wheel.

The combination of larger housings gives the RS2 turbo more performance and efficiency when its on boost, but as with ALL larger turbos the downside is additional lag and slower response. Its not a big downside on a nicely setup RS2, but be sure to stay away from turbo parts used on some 1980's K26 turbos as they don't have much performance potential.

Ask him for the RS2 cold side and compressor wheel. Its a known entity with good tuning potential. If he is planning on keeping the hot side the same, then you wont have as much lag as the RS2 and ultimately less top end whack... That translates reasonably well to a max power figure of 350bhp (versus ~380max on the RS2). These figures will need things like RS2 intercooler and fuelling of course, plus 7A or RS2 exhaust camshaft.

Sounds like what he is offering is a 'small hybrid' turbo - but make sure to ask for the RS2 cold side - the part numbers for housing and wheel can be found with a search here. You'd be wise not to just accept any old 'bigger cold side' as you will have no idea what its capable of - ideally he should have something called a 'compressor map' which will characterise it in standard terminology.

Also ask for 360 degree bearing for the centre housing - better durability than the normal 270 degree item. Might cost more though...

Oh and make sure it is dynamically balanced before it comes back to you - the turbo builders have special equipment for that.

              Universal Turos

              RS2 turbo is listed under "Audi - 80", S2 turbo under "Quattro - 20v"

£750 for an RS2 turbo seems to be pretty good VFM.

                  Cheers boys for your replys

                  Thats the company.

Might just buy the RS2 turbo and sell mine on? It was reconed @ audi in 2002 and has only done about 30,000 since then.

I'm new to all this stuff so please be gental with me
At the moment the cart is standard power but hopefully i will get the porsche brakes in the next few week then the turbo upgrades.

I bought a turbonetics T3/T4 hybrid from them a few years ago, can't complain about them as the turbo was a good'un.

IMHO don't rush into anything then, do a bit of research and decide on the performance you're after before spending your hard earned on go faster bits that may not make you fast enough.

                    BTDT, Lol have I.....

                    Good luck

Dealt with universal a few years ago- mainly getting them to recon RS turbo,Cosworth, nissan GT-IR turbos- had problems within a couple of months with all of them-wastegates failing etc-LOADS of hassle/blaming me/sending back to be checked etc.(all the time customers car is off the road so they are really happy!!)-switched to turbo dynamics never had a problem since...
Haven't dealt with them for 5+ years...... may have improved..........may not.
                      Thought you'd like to know..
