    Help! Rebuild problems.

I have pretty much got the enigne together but shock horror when i notice that my distributer from my old engine doesn look like it will mesh with the other wheel on the end of the cam, dont see why there would be a difference.

Another thing is that the sump for the "2nd engine" (the one i bought and building up) is different from the one that came out my 3b, seems to have a set of holes in the little bit that sticks out on the exhaust side whilst my old engine doesnt

Really need my mind put at rest to know why there are these differences and that the enigne i bought as a 3B is a 3B!

    Your help is much appreciated!

Not sure about the first one. Only thing I can think of is that the cam is from an earlier AAN engine which used a dizzy stump for the hall sender. Strangely this used a gear arrangement with more teeth if memory serves me correctly. There are some threads on this somewhere along with comparsion shots.
I think you are talking about the sump extention. On aircon cars the oil return from the turbo was plumbed into the top of the sump extention rather than back into the front of the block. Two solutions. Either use a oil retun from an aircon car and blank the block off or vice versa. I don't think the pipe is that expensive for the aircon cars. which is unusual for any Audi pipe!

    This any use:

Thnks for the help just managed to resolve the camshaft problem. ETKA shows two intake cams for the
3B, they changed after chassis number 8B-N-005 500. The drive gears for the dizzy are different not usre why but will use the old cam as i dont want to buy a new dizzy. Though couldnt find any info to see if the cams are different in timing? I shouldnt think they are.
Just thought i would post for completeness.
As for the sump extention think i will just swap them over for ease, a seal is cheaper than a hose!

Hmm looks like i jumped the gun. Just looked at the thread posted above and the cam gear which is in the new engine is an AAN, looks exactly the same as the photos. And my 3B one looks like the 7A gear.
Is this likely to mean that the exhaust cam is an AAN one what are the timing differences between 3B and AAN exhaust any point in leaving the AAn one in or should I put the cams from my original engine in? AHHH so many questions!

Well i'm pretty sure my orginal cams are 3B it's just trying to accertain what the ones in the engine ive built up are from, I was led to belive it was a 3B engine when i bought it, and when i stripped it the were no differences between the enignes except the cams.
Yea if you could try and have a look that would be great try and sort out this conumdrum.
I would prefer the timing to be correct!

Dam where did i put the enigma decoder? Germans eh?
Seriously though mine has (from the know 3b engine) 034AM MON1 161B, those are the only markings except for the germany thing and the audi stamp. so the plot thickens!
Dont know about the other as it's at the workshop.
                cheers mike

Not sure how much of it you got. The AAN sump is a one piece unit. The AAN would have the engine no stamped on the exhaust side of the cylinder head near the upper front. It's possible that someone has stuck an early AAN head on a 3b bottom end or perhaps fitted some S2 components to it. A late AAN would have a boss for the hall sender at the front of the head.
One way round this would be to swop the 3b cams and the lifters into the other head keeping them in their respective order.

So the lifters are different from the 3b? It's not possible to just swap the 3B cams in? Obviously this is speculative untill i can get the garage to read me the PN on the head and the other cams!
                    Cheers Mike

No, its just that lifters and cams wear together. So to avoid any potential problems its better to keep them matched as sets. The alternative would be to replace them with new ones!

Ah i see, had a bit of a brain fart there. Anyone know how much new lifters are? Probably too much for my budget! Think i will stop speculating and just wait and see tommorow. Should i leave the exhaust cam in? Or swap that to 3B? (assuming it is an AAN)
                        Cheers Mike
