thanks all .should have asked before i started ,took me 2 hours to get the manifolds off.
steering hose isn't leaking yet but has been rubbed until you can see the braiding at £200 for a new i one might try repairing it .
it is quite difficult.t is a high pressure hose at high psi.I also asked if it would be possible to manufacture this hose from high pressure hose and i was advised against it..
This is a good job ..Have had the pleasure of this also
Like others have said keep the manifolds on the head as is is easier to lift the head off with them on and if you want to take them off it easier on a bench rather than the engine bay
When i took the IM off i just bought a long 1/4" extension that slid through the hole no problem and was off in no time
Things to do when you have the head off and you have the full gasket kit:
Replace all the valve stem oil seals /lap all the valve just to clean them up and seat better
Replace the water pipe that runs along the side of the block (beside the thermost housing going to the heater matrix pipe)
Get the head checked by machine shop to see if it warped..skimming 2 thou off is a good thing to make sure you have a clean surface for good seal .(you will need the Inlet valves out for this)
Remember the orinatation of the cam holders as i had forgot and put them in the wrong way round and that locks the cams ...doh.!!!
When you take off the EM ..Studs will brake for sure ..I would replace the lot..(Vagparts and replace with RS2 studs as they are shorter studs)
When removing the downpipe from the Turbo take the awkward one out first and tighten the rest up so it helps slacken that one (had fun with this)
Sure there is more but thats off the top of my head
can anyone tell me the cambelt change interval?
i'm changing it while its in bits but wondered if i needed to change the water pump aswell .
i need to stop looking at the forum ,the job gets bigger every time i do
