I have exactly the same behaviour on mine. Let's try to find out if the additional OBD cable is faulty then....
Does someone know the electrical diagram for this cable?

I did put a meter on the connections and got a link from each contact on the black+white plugs. I actually got 2 links from one of the black contacts.
      A schematic would help .......

Remember that the problem still can lay in the Vag-com unit instead of the 2x2 cable. I read somewhere that a more expensive HEX vag-com cable is more reliable when using the 2x2 cable instead of our cheap vag-com unit.

nothing wrong with the alphabid cables,i actually used to have a genuine vagcom setup which was about 200 quid.I sold it when i found that the alphabid ones work fine. Some cars just do not want to work with it(genuine or not),had it on one of mine.Works 100% on any others ive tryed.

Tested the cable on a mates A4 worked fine, also works on my passat, I therefore conclude that its the 2+2 cable that fails.
(as the other 2 car use the bigger plug)
Can anyone bleep out the connections on a working 2+2 cable and us fellas that can't talk to our cars can compare ours.
              cheers
