    Cambelt noise

I did my crank seal and changed the crank sprocket on my 20v today, refitted everything.. seems to be running fine, smoother than before and idling very solidly - also replaced the alternator , alternator bracket and snub mount, all of which were cracked and about the fail.

There is more noise coming from the cambelt than before, not a 'scary' noise, but a more pronounced 'whiring' sound - is this normal with a new cambelt, or possible it just needs to bed in a bit?

All belts are tightened correctly, about 10mm of flex in the drive belts, and just able to turn the cambelt 90deg between finger and thumb...

    Any thoughts?

yeah if you over tighten you get a wirrring noise of the belt swounds like a super charger..

you did replace the tensioner on the belt as these wear and make a noise even if you tighten them up correctly..

Sounds like the cambelt is too tight. I made this mistake once. I think Audi mechanics must be a bit weedy. Put your fingers on a lower torque setting.

only other thing it could be is the cam belt cover could be too tight and rubbing the side of the belt.....

i had a good look to see if there was any rubbing - everything looks to have good clearance, pretty sure its just a bit too tight - does sound just like a supercharger.... i'll slacken it off a tad and see how it goes.... for now really want to make sure its safe to drive as i've got to get to work for a week before i've got time to fiddle with it - about 100 miles or so in all... any thoughts?

not too hard, but means taking the grill out, removing the aux rad, moving the PAS pump and taking off the cambelt cover - a good hours work in all.... doubt i'll be home before dark for a few days though... poo.. hope i don;t have to get the fecking Peasant Wagon (bus)

Cambelts - The only part of a car I know about quite well. The Whirring noise you mentioned shouldn't be a problem. I'm pretty sure that's common when you've newly replaced a few things.

What you don't want to hear is a slight "pop". Which is what happened 1 mile away from the Ferry in Dover. (was going to France) the Cambelt had snapped and the car was officially dead. ('course, that was a volvo estate, not an S2)
