20v UR quattro to RS2 spec

I have a 20v ur quattro (one of the last built) which only has 60k miles on it and I just dont drive it enough because it is simply not quick enough. I have an RS2 with MRC remap and that has a dynoed 350bhp and I also have a 10v 6-speed UR quattro (for trackdays and completely b@rst@rdised) that has over 300 bhp and it is every bit as quick as the RS2 because of the weight difference.

I am moving to RS6 turbos on my RS4 as I am bored wtih 470 bhp (how decadent is this sounding FFS...) and my long term project is the same RS4 spec engine into another 20 UR that I have pulled the motor out of.

The point is that I love the idea of more power in lighter cars and what better car to do it in than the UR!!?

There are quite a few threads detailing what is required to take the S2 engine to RS2 spec but I am not sure as to how much of that is relavent to the 20 UR motor?

I know that I will need a bigger intercooler but am reluctant to cut out the front end as I want to be able to return the car to standard if I have to as any mods will (in the long run at least) affect the resale of this rare car.

I plan to do another 6-speed conversion on the car too and the Boxter caliper conversion that sits within the standard wheels. I have both of these on my 10v.

    Does anybody what is required?

its real difficult if not impossible to get a large intercooler in there without cutting some of the front end .
why not try twin intercoolers like djones or a watercooled chargecooler infront of the radiator thats the only place where you have a bit of room .
if you do 6 speed conversion you will have to cut the transmission tunnel how are you going to put that back to standard ?also you will have to change the drive shafts and suspension legs to s2 spec .

Volcano is right. You are never going to perform an RS2 Spec conversion and be able to turn it back to a mint stocker afterwards....

If I were you, I would keep the Mint UR. er mint and either get another one with engine issues and convert that, or be happy with your Audi lot!

It sounds like you have a lovely set of cars, and one for every occasion already!

      Cheers,

Go on, sell it to me and seek a not so original one to play with!

If it is like that then I'd second that, they are rare and if yours is low miles and mint then it would be a shame to.

Yes I think you are right about the intercooler. On my 10v I have an intercooler in front of the rad and that runs in tandem with a charge cooler that fits where the original intercooler used to be. It keeps inlet temps fine at 1.6 bar (which is what my Rs2 runs too) at no more than 20c over ambient. Only problem with this setup is that the engine struggles to stay cool because of restricted airflow to the (dialynx) rad. However, that only happens on trackdays so may not end up actually being a problem on a road car.

I have done the 6 speed on my 10v and everyone told me that I had to cut the transmission tunnel and fit the S2 uprights etc. Well we fitted the S2 uprights, hubs and drive shafts but then had problems with the abs not working (wrong number of teeth so it gets confused), different caliper mounting points etc etc. In actual fact you can use std UR uprights, hubs, driveshafts etc and weld mounting points (front and rear) for the ARB pickups (because you have to use S2 subframes with an S2 rear diff) This works absolutely fine. The drive shafts are a little shorter but a little shimming as fine. Likewise with the prop, there is plenty of movement in the UJs to stretch the extra 5mm or so.

As far as the gear change is concerned, you don't have to use and S2 tunnel. If you use a Coupe GT lever from about 1982 vintage then the lever works in the reverse way to the UR lever, with the ball joint above the linkage and not below. This reverses the movement and you get a nice short throw precise change. It is not a straight swap but not far from it. My car has been ruinning this set up for 2 years now with no probs.

Its wierd but there were so many people that had claimed to have done the 6-speed conversion but when it actually came down to finding out how to do it I wasn't convinced that many actually had!! We had to learn the hard way!!!

Steve, If you see my reply to volcano, I actually think that the car could be converted without any serious surgery. I did buy that other 20v that needed a little TLC and that is being converted to run the RS4 engine. I really can't justify getting another UR to pull to bits!!!

Thats about the cars, I love Audis (as you can see!) but have a few other (non audi)toys in the cupboard just for fun!!!

Indeed rob! Does yours run a 6-speed too, if so did you do the Coupe GT thing that I mentioned above?

Do yo havew the answers regarding converting to RS2 spec. The spec of yours looks to be around 300+bhp..........

But if it had a sensitive careful conversion that could be reversed back to OE........

did you just augment the std intercooler with the charge cooler? If so, were inlet temps still ok? What boost are you running?
