Are there any pro's and cons to coating the crown and skirt of pistons?

On searching the forum there's a few people saying they wouldn't coat pistons in a month of sundays

There are some ( such as Pisobiker ) who ran with coated pistons and others such as Mark Halligan and Audiman who didn't deem it necessary.

Looking for some technical backup website etc that support either theory.
