I was having a chat with friends about some turbocharged engine and the following came up:
The 5 cilinder engines have a very good reputation for having a very strong block, especially the block itself (the non rotating parts). We were wondering if the 180-225 bhp 1.8T is a good offspring of that...
Yes there are some similarities, they all have the same bore etc. And yes there are differences, we know the newer 1.8T engines have improved electronics and smaller but quickers spooling turbo's and are more set up for smooth driving than big bhp.
Maybe the rods are also stronger on the I5, but if fitted with the same pistons and rods, could a 1.8 still handle the same bhp per litre as the I5 engine? Maybe the walls and bearings are smaller because it is build more compact, making the engine more fragile? Maybe the casting of the block is less good? Maybe you need nikasil liners, like they do with high boosting Cossies and EVO's?
Is anyone in the know? Anyone seen both engines in detail?
Ps. in Rallycross there are several VAG engines (even after the Audi S1 and S2 days) running massive boost and get heavily abused. Some of those 4 pots are 20V, some are 16V. Some have dieselblocks, some were 1.8's rebuild to 2.0 (I guess) others are basicly 2.0. For the 2nd time in row Lars Larson with the Skoda Fabia with Trollspeed beat the highly developed Citroëns (Snobeck) and Fords (Trollspeed and Julian Godfrey). I don't know what engines are used in the WRC's (but they are build by Lehmann)...
