    oil thermostat?

anyone ever tried using an oil thermostat of some sort?I was wondering for those(including me) who carry a larger oil cooler nowdays if it would be effective to use and mound some kind of oil thermostat or temp sender that would effectively not allow oil to run through the oil cooler until a certain temp would be reached in oil engine and then after the temp is reached the oil could run through the cooler and cool itself.
I was thinking more of a sender actually that could be rigged somewhere and permit the oil to move in and out the cooler after a temp of 80 or 90C would be reached in engine oil.Reason is for the cold winter, the oil could get warm faster and reach a correct working temperature. Then if some heavy traffic appears or heavy foot for that matter, the cooler will be there to sort things out.

    any ideas?

On the oil filter body there are three bolts that hold down what looks like a flat plate (looking down from above) its under that.. opens at 100 degress from memory. Worth checking as its unfiltered oil at that point and the piston can get stuck if it gets any debri through it.

I always thought the oil thermostat was set for 87 degrees - same as the coolant thermostat

what i found on repair manuals as oil thermostat is called 'piston' in ETKA and has part number 035115429,but it doesnt indicate the operating temperature.
