    Chip identification?

After a bit of info please.
After a long wait, my 1.4 bar generic chips arrived yesterday from MRC.
I'm no stranger to opening the ECU and swapping chips and understand the orientation they need to be inserted with regards to the small notch, boost chip is on the PCB with the map sensor and fuelling chip the other PCB.

Only one snag with the MRC chips, they have no identification on them whatsoever!!!. Not even a sticker over the small window on the top which I'm led to believe will render them useless if left in the light (not sure if that's correct or not, but they are sealed up until they get fitted)

So, question is, if I unluckily inserted the boost chip in the fueling chip socket and visa versa (remember, I have no way of knowing) will I do any damage to the ECU? or will it just obviously fail to start??
Of course I could get them the right way round first time, I've a 50/50 chance. But do I risk it?

I'm not to keen on sending them back, as after one or another (slow communication and bloody postal strikes) it's taken since my initial inquiry on the 25th sept until now to actually get them in my hand.

    Thoughts?

    TIA
    Jas..

The motor chip ends in 512 - the turbo chip ends in 257.

Use better light source. They should carry factory labels on the chips.

Use piece of duct tape to cover the windows. Electric light is not dangerous to a chips, because only UV light hurts them. So do not show them to the sun, and it's OK.

There is a small chance that you can damage one of the chips. However there are many successfull attempts to connect chips incorrectly without frying anything. So the chance is really small .

I would try to minimize risk, first covering the windows with black duct tape, then using really good light source, to check labels at different angles. Electrical chip manufacturers like to label chips with stupidly selected paint, which is not contrast to the chip body, and wears with time.

Also I cannot get motive, why MRC should clean the labels intentionally. Maybe they are using some not widely known chip for latched boost one, and don't want the world to discover it . The world is actually using conversion sockets with latches and don't care about that

I have understood, that chips have no markings at all ? If they have numbers and letters, skip my post .

are there varieties of chips to use and if so what are their differences?
i want to have someone to get the program into 2 chips(boost/inj) and i get quoted some ridiculus prices from 3euro for a chip to 80 euro for a chip!!!

Fueling chip is widely used 1$ chip 27c256, problem is boost chip, which was 87c257 latched UV eeprom orginally. This type of chip is not manufactured for many years already, and due to reason, that it was not widely used it's quoted as rare part. This makes it's price non predictable. I have went externally latching route, when you are adding external circuits to convert between 27c256 and 87c257 "protocols" .

found both chips here, and boost chip costs around 10$ and inj.chip around 2$
are these the required chips?I mean i could order them from there if they are correct

wild idea!!: which is the correct chip if i wanted 2 programs in the ecu with button applied?that is 2 boost and 2 inj. maps???

Wrong - motor chip is 27C512 in ABY/AAN/ADU. The 87C257 is easy enough found still today - I get mine from USA - very cheap recently

                      Thanks guys
One has no marking on it at all, but the other I can just make out a very faint M87C257 on it, so I at least know now that that's the boost chip.
                      Will sticker them up.

                      Thanks again.

Paul is right again, and me is wrong (again). Bad habbit to write before think I do have . I was so focused and excited on writing about latch, that I mixed eeprom numbers... Sorry .

2PapVas: Note, that you need eeproms to be in DIL28 or DIP28 packaging to fit ordinary chip sockets in motronic. PLCC32 is not good package for this operation, others are even worse.

BTW what is sane price? For example is this cheap?:

How can we get 2 maps to work with a chip. Eg both set up for different fuel?

I can look into this, but it might need some bodged chip carrier to pull it off... One idea is to use a chip double the size required and wire a switch into the highest address bit so as to control which half of the chip is used. Not elegant but it could work. The turbo chip is already weird in that the top half is a copy of the bottom half - so it is conceivable that a hack could make use of two turbo maps as well. Not sure I have the time for this but it doesn't seem to be out of the question.

It will work (using double capacity chip). I have seen it implemented on aan. But the guy was using chip carrier to implement latching between 27c512 to 87c257 (btw fancy and compact work with SMD elements). For the fuel chip it's even more simple. Higher address pins are just hanging in the air from the socket, so he used DIP32 socket with few thin wires to route everything inside ECU. Simple switch is wired to ecu, and switched when it's needed. Haven't seen switching itself in action, however I believe it will be better to switch engine off to switch the maps.

One thing - I don't get the reason why such thing is needed? You have throttle pedal to adjust fuel consumption. Maybe in winter? Use piece of rubber hose with garden valve to go round N75 valve . Famous jap crap bleed valve just in opposite side. Works like charm. My friend has used when breaking in freshly build engine.
