    Cutting out in first gear!

After an epic weekend doing the head gasket and cam belt I've got the old girl back together and the intial test drive indicated that all was well.

However, when going for a small gap yesterday the car cut out (like over-boost protection) in first. I've just done a boost leak test and it's still doing it but only in first gear! 2nd onwards seems OK... very strange. I'm popping to All Audi this evening but any pointers would be nice, I'm guessing one of the crank sensors is playing silly ******s but a proper boost leak test might highlight some more issues as I was only using a foot pump...

Does it happen if that you are taking it easy or only if you drive it like you stole it?

Could something be slightly loose from where you changed the h/g? its wierd that its only in first tho as i'd have expected it to do it in other gears but depending if you are giving it some in first the stresses could be more.

It happens in 2nd if you go WOT quickly but seems fine in the higher gears. Doesn't take much in 1st for it to start cutting out. Will nurse it to AA and see what VAGcom says.

Hi, does anyone know what the wedge thing in the throttle body does on the S2?

We took it off Andy's car because it looked dumb.

Problem has now progressed to the stage where the car is stalling and will not accelerate in any gear. I'd be suprised if it is the throttle body, guessing that it's more likely to be a hall sender / wiring to a hall sender or maybe the TPS.

I popped over to All Audi and had the codes read, no codes except an ABS one from a RR session! Boost leak test showed a leak on one of the IC hoses buit that's sorted and now it's all gravy.

Can't help but think that this is all related to it not starting a month or two ago and I also had problems getting it started after the weekend's activities.

            ... and the fun begins!!!

I would vote for some wire which is broken/not tightened properly. On 1st gear engine and the stuff inside the car has the biggest movement. Check for loose wires/connectors/hoses.

What is the function of the MFTS and the temp sender on the back of the head? Would a dodge connection on one of these cause the engine to cut? I was discussing this with Chen and he couldn't remember exactly what the fuinction was. The MFTS hasn't ever been disconnected until now so I wonder if it could be something like a dodgy connection there.

Going to have a play tonight if I get time inbetween decorating the new pad and entertaining

MFTS limits boost when coolant temperature is high. So I'm not sure if that would cause an overboost protection type cut.

G62 coolant sensor on the back of the head is used by the ECU to determine correct timing and fuelling for cold start etc. If disconnected/faulty it resorts to cold settings (runs rich) or uses G42 IAT sensor as a guide IIRC.
