My car seems to run very cold @ around 55-60 deg out on the road. in the town it runs a bit hotter around 70ish. is this normal?

      Paul,

mines around the same as yours and only reaches 90 degrees after sitting for a while in traffic, and strangely enough it runs cooler since I removed the aux rad .

Since changing the thermostat mine sits between 85-92ish degrees no matter where i am. Before it used to sit at 55-70 ish and run a bit poorer, but since it warms up straight away it flys

Lower temps on a run usually indicate a duff stat. If your thermostat isn't regulating the optimum water temp you'll be loosing performance and wasting fuel. This job is a cheap performance upgrade that saves you £££s in the long run. Shame it's such a pain in the *** to do

There isn't a 2 minute job in the whole car

Yep - changing the thermostats' not that easy - access is a nightmare - if you have a cambelt change needed i'd get it done then - you need to drain off the coolant etc before you change it and the pas pump is smack bang in the way

                    Cheers,

                            If memory serves me right-

Preparation - drag knuckles along floor until multiple injuries are sustained. Score tips of fingers and underside of forearms with rusty craft knife. Sprinkle liberal quantities of metal filings, grit and rust into eyes. Repeatedly hit head on blunt heavy object. Rub used engine oil into wounds. Become concerned that you may have forgotten to order a really important part!

Execution - Only decide to undertake the job if -
                            1) you don't need the car for work tomorrow?
                            2) You have the best part of half a day to waste?
                            3) You're absolutely sure you ordered all the parts you might need??

Open bonnet and think your way through the job. At this point there are a few options-
                            1) Realise you must have forgotten something and decide it's best to do it when you've got more free time.
                            2) Decide the temp wasn't that bad, and hey! you don't mind if the heater takes forever to warm up anyway.
                            3) Pay someone else to suffer.

Hehe.. it's not that bad if you don't mind doing the type of job that should take half an hour but takes half the day. You'll be looking at removing radiator cowels- I removed the radiator as I couldn't get to the stat hosing without it being moved. I don't have aircon, so I don't know what may be involved here? Power steering feed pipe to pump and the pump itself needs to be moved. Then it's just two little 10mm headed bolts on the housing and you're there.
It's probably a good idea to change the coolant hoses and clips on the block and the coolant pipe on the head if they haven't been done before. The orientation of the stat is vertical with the two bars on its outward face.
Stat housing bolts are 10nm from memory.

                            Good luck!
