Maf is def top of the list... try borrowing a know good one and don't rely on a 'spare', you need one off a running car! I have swopped what I thought was a 'good' spare in the past and got caught out

Do you run a aftermarket air filter and is it a oiled type?? They kill maf's

Check the pins in the maf connector are clean and in place as well.

hmmm sorry to see you're having a nightmare on this. I'd also say MAF as i know when i didnt plug mine back in it would idle but when i tried to drive away it was terrible and killed the engine.

Good luck getting it sorted....you WILL break 300bhp

I had a similar problem almost exactly as you describe. It was on a Dialynx short quattro. Tried absolutely everything. Turned out it was sediment in the fuel tank due to the car standing for so long that blocked the fuel filter. Would start perfectly touch the accelerator... dead....

    Just a thought..

Having pressure tested it I'd know if it was a split pipe or dodgy joint so I can rule that out.

Going to check the continuity on the coil pack earth as the wiring here is a little tired and so might have split after being disturbed.

Also going to check the ECU and fuse / relay boxes.

The fact that it was running means that it's just going to be one thing (for now).

I agree about it not being the TB.

Have reset the ECU so will see what happens this evening.

On a more entertaining note, my Milltek DP turned up yesterday! :mischeif:

Andy - I think you could be on the right track with that idea as you would have had to remove and lift away the coil packs to get the head off... Could well be that some crusty old wiring in there has let you down - or you were really unlucky and snagged some of it when refitting the cam cover with coilpacks.

    Keep us posted...

ok im not trying to annoy you but when you say it was ok for a bit was this after you took the wedge of the butterfly to allow more air to get in .. i was wonderiing if this wedge removed ment that all the cylinders dont get the air correctly to them causing a valve or something to burn out.. or on low throttle positons the air dosent get distributed evenly to each cylinder,, causing poor running,, i ask this because i was tempted to take the wedge of but thought it must do something to the air as it goes down the inlet like forcing it over the top to get an even sucking in, in each cylinder.. i hope you get this sorted its pants when they dont run right but gee it does make them seem fast once they work correctly...

I bet when you find the problem its nothing you touched whilst doing your head gasket.

Coincidence! gets you checking all areas you have just worked on, usually something completely different!

    Bloody cars!

    Keep the faith!

    .

Would,by any chance, the ECU retard the ignition timing/cut the fuel (when under load) due to knock sensor/s needing re-adjustment.Dont know why I say this if all was OK before, but just a thought.

OK,I know sod all about S2,but this was the case on a car I once owned with a similar engine management set-up.

    Good Luck Andy

    Hey Andy,
Sorry to hear you're having problems - disheartening I know!
Just as a thought, are you sure the spares you have tried are all 100% - amybe the MAF you tried is also faulty?
Maybe clutching at straws, but trying to help.

Had similar problem twice before, eg idle ok and acceloration on smallest throttle opening but anything more and she would cut out, split hose from MAF and the second time it was the maf itself. Double check everything from the maf to the throttle body and inlet manifold including the dump valve (make that 3 times it happened, dump valve top split wide open )

Hope you get it sorted soon

Right, did the head gasket, cambelt etc. etc. last weekend, got it running Sunday and all was pukka. On Monday the car started cutting out when accelerating in 1st and then over the course of Tuesday the problem got worse and no it stalls when trying to pull away and randomly cuts idle.

I've tried a spare MAF, speed sensor and crank sensor with no joy. I've pulled codes with nothing logged, I've checked all the plugs I can get my hands on, again, nothing.

Full boost leak test of everything did not highlight anything.

The car idles fine and revs ok when stationary but when trying to pull away it stalls and when moving it cuts under anything but the lightest acceleration. It starts first time so would not indicate a faulty hall centre.

Moral o the story, if it ain't broke don't f'ing fix it!

    Any suggestions welcome.
i did the head on my S2 in the summer and the only thing that i did forget was the earth strap from the coils on to the cam cover which gave it the same symptoms..This is on i take it ?

All the plugs on ok on the bulkhead

vacuum pipe to the ecu hasn't came off?

******. Sorry to hear that Andy.
It seems wierd that it was cutting out in first gear but not the higher gears. It does sound like a dodgey connection somewhere, something serious if it's got that bad. I don't think it's that TB wedge somehow.
