  • Well, got the car back...

Starting it up this morning was awful. The noise from under the bonnet was like a bag of spanners had bene dropped in (7A cam ti blame.) It smoothed out as the journey went on - hydraulic tappets sorting themselves out no doubt. The black smoke eventually died away. The car will still only start with foot to the floor, and likes to stall too.

Idle is lumpy as hell, car has no power (ok, an exaggeration - about 50hp. Escort diesel n/a vans LITERALLY outdrag it.) the exhaust is blowing in several places, theres oil coming out from *somewhere* collecting in the sump guard and rolling out, and I have no idea how I'm going to get my locking wheel nuts off as the socket seems to have gone walkies.

BUT it's back, and I'll look at stuff in the morning before sending the ECU off (Paul N sending you PM shortly). Not sure what to do with the drivers door that's obviously been opened with a jack underneath it yet, but I'll think of something.

Strange. I know it's yet to be remapped etc, but I feel like I paid someone to fook my car up - it had something like 300hp before, now it's got... well, whatever is less than a diesel van!

Hey ho, just gotta keep smiling

    Cheers PJ

Sorry PJ, I'm not with it, what happened?

Has it been nicked or have you been to a dodgy garage?

    David

P.S. is it cold in Antarctica today?

It sounds like something else is not right - major air leak?

Have you got custom oil lines to the turbo?

Have you got enough oil in the car? That can cause noisey tappet noise.

Give me a shout if you want someone to look over it. I can bribe her with a weekend shopping in Leeds.

Doug, mate, that is a sterling idea, and I thank you for the offer! (Bet you're thinking 'Damn!' now, eh?). You let me know when where how etc and I will sort it with the wife for a weekend (or a day at least) whenever. Will see you right, too. Send me a PM and we'll take it from there...

Stick dood - the car was in for bits doing to it (K26/27 conversion) but I'm hoping a remap will sort out the state it's in at the moment, or at least give me some hope that it won't be in next week's 'trader as 'spares or repair'

        Ya gotta laff.

        Haven't you....?

            OK PJ,

Thought you'd had your wheels nicked when you mentioned the jack in the door etc....

A Nice 4 litre A8 bi turbo diesel conversion may be a better bet?

Thinking of an avant actually. You can get loads in the back compared to the coupe. Handy for ramraiding the local off license for nabbing contraband to pay for car mods and psychiatrists bills.

Will keep you informed about the car. Right now there's a nice pool of oil spreading underneath it all over my fresh laid concrete garage floor. Wife's gonna love that when she sees it!

*shrug* she already thinks I'm insane - This only confirms it.

Wife - "it was fast enough to start with."
Me - "i want it faster."
Wife - "yes, but it's slower now, much slower. Even my diesel is a lot faster than that."
              Me - "I ... uhhh... ummm." *shuffle*

I seem to recall someone taking the mickey out of Audiman's when his Girlfriend beat him with her 1.3 speed wagon?

I can't remember who it was, maybe it was on the other table on the saturday night in the pub at the garage meet?

Why, I have no idea what you mean. Whoever could that have...

It was me! I admit it! Sob!

But 1.3 shopping trolleys are much faster than what blew me off today. My mate in his 206 hdi left me for dead, and an escort 1.8d van pulled away steadily. Watching the revs rise by 1-200rpm every few seconds is quite demoralising!

                    How's the economy?

That is of the major oil companies as you are probably using loads of fuel and not getting the response.

Just a quick check, are you using the correct grade of oil as the hydraulic tappets can be very fussy. I'm sure that I don't need to ask the question but I have!!

I hope you get it sorted soon.

                    David.

Paul, nightmare, tried to phone you tonight but the wife said you were asleep. Ah, bless! Well you are getting on a bit!

                      As for the car........

What did you use on the oil feed to the turbo? Spacer block?
Check the oil level, have the tappets shut up yet? If they have I suspect that they have just taken some time to prime back up after the tappets were dismantled and drained. This should have been done if the cams were taken out. Im not putting another mechanics work down as im sure it was done to a high standard. I had loads of hassle getting my oil feed pipe to seal.

Give me a ring if you want to chat about this.

Paul, door hinges are adjustable, we had a mechanic in last week for mot on a coupe and he said door was atrocious but he removed bolt and said thread was adjustable and now it's like new again!
hope this sheds a little bit of light on all your problems and hope you get them sorted soon and back to cruising at more than 50 mph!!!
                        Regards,
