Tappet sound from head

The distributer has a nylon gear than runs off the cam what happens over time with wear there is a gap caused which causes the tapping/rattle noise ..........If it is this it will get worse then your car wont start as it will slip off the cam and ****** up the ignition timing .Guy on ebay sells brass gears for them........Best way to check is to take cam cover off,not distributer as that is PITA to get to ,and check for wear as other have said could be noisy injector easy way of ruling this out is have the car idling and unplug one at time (car will run on 4 cylinders)and see if the noise goes away

10w-40

What oil are you running in it?

My friend has this problem with his 20v as he put 10w-40 in it.

I've recently changed to silkolene pro 10w50 lovely car runs cooler etc.

My S2 went to the main stealer for a full service and MOT and they put in GTX Magnatec 10W-40. I also later had the same problem with noisey tappets and even though the oil level was at least 3/4 the way up the stick they said it was due to oil level. I topped it up to full and the problem went away but am not happy as it sems to level critical, sounds like the 10w-50 worth a try.

well ive had a good listen around the engine today and its proving very hard to track down. the dizzy certainly is noisey but its not producingthe tappet sound. Head seems fine, but i kept getting drawn back to the power steering pump at the front. with the bonnet down you can hear the noise much easier which would suggest the noise is at the front of the engine rather than at the back near to the dizzy. I will check out this nylon wear though. All of the injectors appear to be making the same noise, nothing untoward. I guess the easiest way to see if it is the pump is to take the belt off and run the engine up, would prove it either way. thanks for all the suggestions though. Nice to know about the dizzy problem

Its not something that i've checked mark but i will have a look and report back. I might try and record the sound with a camera but doubt very much it will be clear enough to identify where its coming from

Could be the water pump i had this it started off with a tapping noise then got worse to a knocking

And the water pump is under the pas pump so sounds to me like the water pump bearing may be on its was

My PAS pump was making a knocking noise, mainly due to having ATF in the system when I got the car. Pump worked fine no leaks just noisey.
I have just changed it and its stopped the noise.
Does your noise stay the same when hot or cold? If it does I had the same and after stripping the engine (80.000 miles) the oil pump drive dogs were worn. New oil pump and silence.

Hi Gt, yes the noise is there from starting the engine in the morning cold and is there after the engine is warm so as soon as the crank is turning.

The water pump was new about 20k ago so i cant believe that has gone already but you never know. car has done 150k now so maybe its the oil pump

Well, i was wrong, it was not the head.

It turned out to be coming from the vibration damper on the main crank V pulley.

According to the family album it appears that the damper is part of the pulley where on some models it was seperate.

Anyone know how much a complete vibration damper/pulley set retails at? will be phoning audi in the morning with the part no. to see how much new.

all 3 of my s2's have had the bottom pulley vibrating...perhaps i should change this damper too....maybe a group buy from plymouth audi is in order

Mine has the two part pulley,
New outer (where the belts sit) was about £45 i think, damper was a joke price, £250 or so I remember...
