What is the upper hp limit on stock rods?

    Okay, I read this thread:

However, it is not clear to me what the upper crank or wheel horsepower limit is on stock AAN, ABY or ADU rods. I've been under the impression that anything more than 400 crank hp is starting into the range where you might want/need to replace the OE rods with something stronger. And certainly, by 450 whp, upgraded rods are a necessity.

    Am I wrong on this?

I was trying to find the photo of the "banana" shaped OE rods to find out what had happened but I couldn't even find the photo.

Well Its not so much power that bends rods, its torque.

I think 500Nm is the limit on stock rods.

I am sure there will be people that will say more, Its down to the owner i guess at the end of the day.

Also for 400bhp i would look into RS2 bottom end bearings and defently for 450whp

                banana?

                What are those rods and pistons from? An I5 20vt (one's missing) or a 1.8 L 20vt I4?

I need to know because I want to use the photo to help settle an argument, er "discussion".

                TIA

S2 rods from a 3B engine bent by an RS2 turbo

It has been suggested to me that "the 3B which had an inferior ignition system which leads to preignition which = BROKEN RODS. Alot of it had to do with people using the incorrect distributor cap (yes there is a difference= narrow points)"

Is this the real problem with the 3B that doesn't occur with an ABY or ADU (or AAN)?

(I am not being argumentative, just curious).

What a load of bullsh*t IMO, yes the ignition system is inferior but if you produce to much torque / bhp than the rods can handle they will bend pure and simple.
