    Snapped Cam Cap Stud

I was just rebuilding the head and everything was going so well. But then when i was torquing up the Cam Cap Studs one snapped. I was only doing them to 15nm so god knows why it snapped but it did.

Maybe it got damaged when the machine shop had it or maybe i manged to damage it some how. Anyway, point is i need to extract that stud and replace it with a new one:
    030 103 397 A
Its snapped just at the base of the thread.
Would it be a good idea to do all 24 of them? Im going to get new nuts too as im not taking any chances.

When extracting these should it be done like any other snapped stud or is there a easier / special technique to this????

As always, any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks.
    Bo

Didn't put the cap on wrong way round, please, please say no...

No, all caps were on the right way round. I just checked the torque wrench. Its not working properly at all. I think i must have been putting more like 30+nm on to them studs

That was a very careless mistake of me to use a old click type wrench on something as important as this..
Therefore they will all need replacing now as the threads are most likely to stressed

        Bad luck Bo.

I managed to re-do an exhaust stud by drlling it out with a new drill bit (i.e. sharp) and then re-tapped it. It's not a nice job so if you have the time to take it to a machine shop then do. If one snapped unexpectedly at 15Nm then sounds rather dodgy, that just shouldn't happen on a cam cap stud... get the others checked by a machine shop, if they snap then they can sort them out for you at the same time rather than you being high and dry in a barn in De'm.

You can do it yourself but it's a nerve wracking experience and not for the feint hearted! I wouldn't recommend it as you'll never get it true without a pillar drill and a normal pointed drill will wander if your centre pumch isn't good enough.

Basically, unless you have nerves of steel then it's time to get it to a machine shop.

Should get away with small drill bit for pilot hole then use easy out to extract ?

              Cheers Andy.

Yeah. i think your right.. What a PITA though!!! Especially as i have to take all the valve gear out again now too as they will get loads of shards of metal in the head.

              There must be another way......

                  Thanks guys,

I think ill use one of these though:

Then i dont need to worry about mess from a drill, as the stud isnt broken of at base it should hopefully work.

Am also going to replace all 24 studs in case any of the others got over stressed

How many mm's do you have left? those stud extractors dont grip from the base, should think you would need 10mm left on that stud for it to grip.

ps Those 'easy out' things on ebay can be more trouble than they are worth in my experiance.
