I'm going to enquire if someone local has vag-com, i'll let them have a butchers at it at the garage, and then check the remaining inter cooler pipe. Get a second opinion and wait too see what can be done or whats the cause.
Before that i think i could do with a power steering pump as it's off the car now.
Am i looking for ones from any 2.2 20vt engine eg from the RR quattro, ABY and 3b s2, and the early s4 and s6's? Or will any other ones from a coupe/cabrio be the same?

check the plugs too - if one has a hairline crack in it, it will fail under load.......Leave a comment:

get vag-com or some kind person with it to connect it up and see what's happening,
I'd be tempted now that it back home to go round all the jubillee clips/connections, TB hose and the rest of them again , allied with vag-com error output should give you a good start, it sound like a boost/air leak as mentioned by others, everytning is a suspect ; maf, wgfv, dv etc, etc, there's many threads in here relating to the symptoms you describe, shouldn't take long to get to the bottom of though, worst case 2 hours of inspecting/reconnection.

We've checked the upper two big pipes, i think im right in saying the go from the inter cooler to the engine, and another goes around. And there is another 3rd pipe, which goes from the botom of intercooler to the bottom of turbo? I might have got the sides mixed up, but i've had someone look at it, and he says the top two pipes seem good, no cracks, now it's just the bottom one to check.
I was wondering if it could be some sort of electrical fault aswel? ECU playing up?Leave a comment:

surging and coughing sounds like a split air hose i could say. These things deteriorate if not in operation. As for the smoke, could be from your split hose. However the OK sign does not leave and stays yellow usually when there is a shot bulb in the brakes.Leave a comment:

Running problems on ABY, surging-cutting off
The S2 ABY has been standing around for quite a while, well over 6 months..I finally tried bringing it home. Everything was working although the auto check didnt say OK because i reckon it had a water pipe leak or something or other...We fill it up, it was pretty much empty before that.
Gently set off it was driving ok never tried putting my foot down, just nice and easy, but then i realise the temperature has dropped back to pretty much nothing. I stopped and checked the water even though it hadnt over heated, we out a bit in...
Got onto the M1 and we pulled up to the service just before sheffield southbound because i had a brake warning light on aswel. Again we checked the water and it was still there..
So we set off again, but now the speedo packed up, nevertheless we carried on, slowly accelerating up past 50-60 i was just about to try and check the boost factor as it was revvin at around 4-5k so i reckon i may have been in 3rd. Next thing i know there's no power in the car, engine just not willing to rev or speed up. It was like surging and then cuttin off, surging and cutting off, very small surges.
I pull over to the hard shoulder turned engine off and tried to get it going again, engine idle was up and down not in one place, slight white smoke coming out from under the passenger door although there were no signs of fire. Again it was just mis firiing and surging and cutting off, i got it going gently but as soon as i accelerarated a bit it plays up again as before and throwing out a bit of black smoke in the process.
2 hour wait for recovery...'err mate this car is four wheel i drive as we said'...'erm i'll just have a look at it and we'll get another truck down here after i've left'
I must have been on the hard shoulder for about 3 hours and it was freezing!
Got the car home, and i'm hoping one of you can point me in the right direction. If it helps before the car was stationary it ran very sweet, no faults nothing, pretty healthy engine 113k on the clock and has been at a crusing indicated speed of 1.50 mph with no mods.Tags: None
