    Flywheels

Simple question, Which is the lighter flywheel, the 7A or 3B and by how much? Converting from 7A to 3B and want to fit the lighter of the 2 flywheels. Thanks

when going to a lighter flywheel,is it appropriate to always balance it with the crank again?

Pefectly yes but if its a OEM Flywheel you will get away with it as its of a high standard. Saying that going from a dual mass to a singal mass maybe be different?

I have lightened my 3B Fly quite alot and will be having it blanced.

Hello "clatter". Hope you don't suffer with it like I do.

My ally flywheel is great, but that rattle / clatter does take some getting used to...

I was warned, There is about 1 hours worth of work left to do just taking the burrs off really. I will post some pictures in my thread.

What causes the extra noise on the Ally flywheel... I've got one sitting on the shelf ready to go.

How noisy is it, slighty annoying or plain irritating?

AFAIK it's caused by tiny high frequency vibrations from the engine. Usually it's not an issue when there's more mass in the flywheel. Increasing idle will usually cure it, but then you also increase wear, particularly on cold startups. Some M3 boys found a concoction of gearbox oils helped to damp out about 90% of the clatter after going lightweight. It's nothing to do with the craftsmanship. Actually, I can't say that for certain on others, but I saw mine and it looked great before going in and it was balanced.

It really bothered me at first, but after a month or so it disappeared into the background. Plus the addition of a nice exhaust rumble helped too. I wasn't 100% convinced at first that it was flywheel clatter - I thought it was a dodgy clutch release bearing because it changed when depressing/lifting the clutch. Whilst my 'box was out recently the clutch release bearing was changed, so I'll finally know for sure soon. I'm also going to use Red Line Heavyweight Gear Oil (for a different reason) and maybe that will damp out some clatter.

http://www.corner-carvers.com/forums/sh ... hp?t=31358 What he's talking about makes sense. I think I've 'heard' it before, even on my sprung-clutch, stock flywheel 80 (mostly when pulling away from really slow corners in second gear, below maybe even 1700rpm...sounds like a box of rocks)...

Any idea on what that concoction of oil was that the M3 owners were using?

Interesting read.. I have an exceptionally light 3B flywheel with a six paddle sprung driven plate and must admit i have not heard the rattle.
