Under power steering pump! Get 15 mirrors set up on a bent stick with a very good torch and feed it in near the turbo and around the timing belt cover careful not to knock any mirrors off! and if you get a friend to shine your torch up the exhaust you should just about manage to see it!

Seriously though, Stat is under the power steering pump, Stat is easier to change whilst doing a timing belt change as the front of the vehicle is dismantled. If you search the Forum for the word Thermostat I am more than sure you will find at least 100 Threads dedicated to this subject!!! :eek2:

It can be a ****** of a job but approach it with a relaxed mind and you should have it done in about...... hour and a half? if everything goes smoothly.

It is under the PAS pump and sits directly behind the water pump. Sorry no pics as I don't have any. It is a PITA to change and I suspect the easiest way is to remove the bumper. The ducting for the main radiator gets in the way but I found this easy to displace enough with the bumper off although I have heard of people changing them by removing the main rad but I am not convinced it can be done easily this way if the aircon condenser is in situ and I don't think it is at all an easy way to fo it. The seal is via an 'o'-ring and I got mine from VAGParts. I did mine whilst changing the cambelt and waterpump and it was a 5minute extra to do the thermostat. Access to the bolts is pretty naff because of that vertical rad ducting.

Put in some new anti freeze while you are there and I found German and Swedish the cheapest for that. Make sure you get the right stuff as the different colours have different inhibitors. I believe that the new pink stuff replaces the old blue and red variants.

**** job, and I wouldn't do mine agian even if it fails. 'Just' whip off the PAS pump and its 'just' below that. 'Really' easy to get at. It uses the same rubber o ring as the intercooler to x-member No wonder that o ring doesnt last long in the breather fumes.
            1.5-2 hours.

Wait until you do the headgasket Paul. Its dead easy to get at then!!

I did mine recently following instructions I found on another site - it was really quite simple - I took it really slow and enjoyed doing it ! (first spannering I've done in approx. 4 years due to brand new golf ownership!). I can't remember which site the info was on, and the instructions didn't mention an oil cooler, at any stage !. (Is this absent on the 3B engine perhaps ? - mine's ABY)

If you fancy those instructions, I'll have a search - let me know !

What do you mean I type too fast?!! lol Only about 40 ish words per minute! Not bad for a fat fingered mechanic!!! lol. Used to work on computers a lot when I worked at Jessops (photographic retailer) in the service department. then I got bored and changed to being a mechanic and have enjoyed it ever since!!

Sorry, just saw the thread. Is this the same thermostat that causes the light to keep flashing??? I have this same problem, taken it to Audi who have said they don't know what the problem is as they have already changed the expansion tank but no joy, any suggestions/feedback ?

i believe that if the thermostat is stuck open and the car runs too cool, the autocheck light will flash as well.
