    ARP Head bolts

    Just for info..

I had my rocker cover off earlier today and thought i would check the torque on the head bolts given that they obviously don't stretch.

Surprisingly they all (but 2) felt slack ish, re torqued to 55lbs nearly all gave 1/8 of a turn.

Thought the info may be of use...

Cheers for the warning, I've re-checked mine a month after fitting and only 2 required re-torquing to 65ftlbs (80Nm) as per the instructions and threads posted on here. 55ftlbs might not be enough, especially with the increased cylinder pressures asssociated with 400 bhp. Unless you have a reason for 55ftlbs??

I always did them at 60lbs but found they leaked water extrenally. Having searched for info and discussed it with a couple of people it would appear that 60lbs may be to much with a metal head gasket as it flattens out the ribbing on the gasket.. if that makes sense...

Anyway last time i fitted the head i torqued to 55lbs and no leaks and no problems at 2.2 bar just checked it out of coincidence..

Plus I'm always worried about crushing the head having done it before on a 10v..

Cool, I thought that there would be a reason and I have read about crushing the head on previous threads. Perhaps they just need checking periodically as per you original warning!

What kind of mileage have you done since they were installed?

          Cheers,

          Mark.

Out of interest how did you run it in, what kind of revs/load are you using now?

I ran it in with 1 bar of boost on Castrol GTX for circa 600miles, changed the oil and filters at 100m then at 300m again for GTX. Now runs on Mobile 1 with 2.2bar of boost with circa 440bhp.

Is this the first retorque after installation or the second?

I was told you needed to retorque the arps after a heat cycle of the engine so is a repeat post heat cycle?

Jamo, this is the first re torque. Not done it before.

Does anyone have opinions or BTDT with respect to torque settings?

Jamo is right- with the ARPs you do a retorque after running the engine up to temp.

                          See the ARP site:http://www.arp-bolts.com/Catalog/Catalog.html

As they are made as Competition bolts/studs in the first place- they are reusable(same with the rod bolts) you measure them before installation and when they exceed a certain length they have gone past their point of no return! and can be used as head guides!!

As long as they are done up to the recommended torque figure and you have no leaks they will be ok

Except the thing that you need to change the bolts everytime you remove the head, is a limit factor in using the original bolts?
Iff yes, for how much pressure the oem ones are good?
                              Thank You!
