I'm looking into inexpensive ways to "lighten the load", and was thinking of replacing the stock radiator fan with a lightweight aftermarket one. I realize if I install one on the rear side I'll need to retain some sort of shield, but I've seen fans which could be mounted on the front of the rad also, which I believe would eliminate the need for a shield. Also looking into a dual setup instead of a single fan. Any opinions?

My AC rad would stop the front mount option pretty much I reckon, so it looks like a rear mount, or.... why not do both.....
You could get a pusher fan for the front and a sucker for the rear (man that sounds bad :-) and then create a true flow-through affair!!
No, that'll defeat the inexpensive option, so why not drop Kenlowe a mail? a lot of their fans were front mounted, so that'll help with the shield problem.
Technically speaking, I suppose if you have a big fan in front of the rad, then when the fan blade is not spining the air flow will be pretty crap at getting past the stationary blades, so rear mount must be more efficient.
Kenlows i have used in the past employed a system where as they mounted by 3 thin prongs threaded through the radiator and the temp sensor was squeezed in along with one of the pipes!!! Very rudimentary affair but they worked.
