My question are there any downsides to the k26/27 being non watercooled???

Just wanna make sure its all good before i buy one.

They run hotter, and also will have to allow turbo to 'cool' down after driving for longer, leave it idling for at least 1 minute.

Ask Mihnea, but I would assume that the EGT's will be higher? This may cause some tuning limitations? Dunno, ask the chip dude

I'd be worried about reliability in the long term, plus I've asked TunedS2 to post a pic of the hot side, as I'm not sure at all 400HP is realistic with that turbo. Theoretically no K26/27 is good for 400HP, except for the ones with a #8 hot side, and that hot side is not available on oil-cooled turbos.

A lot of the big power cossie boys run without water cooling. They say all it does is make the car more user friendly. it heats up quicker and helps with the cooling down. It does nothing to the actual cooling of the turbo. When the turbo is red hot as it often is all it tries to do is boil the water and puts more strain on the cooling system. look @passionford.com there r a few guys on there with over 400bhp and no water cooling.

YOU MUST let it cool down for longer

Paul, the same applies for Audi "big boys" running 500+ HP, a K27/29 can be bought with no water cooling, but saying the water cooling does nothing to the cooling of the turbo is rubbish IMHO, but only if your afterrun system is in working order, otherwise agreed, it does nothing.

This is very true especially on a K26/27 where the shaft is still pretty tiny and it is well known in the 10v ur-quattro community that the oil-only-cooled K26 turbos have reliability issues, even at stock boost levels on those cars that only produce 200 BHP.

Then, I would like to see what hot side this turbo has, as IMHO, the only oil-cooled K26 bearing housing that I know of can only be mated to a small #6 turbine and hot side housing with a 50mm exducer bore, which means that there is no way in hell such a turbo will ever produce 400 HP, no matter how big the compressor on it is.

Yeah i made a bit of a sweeping statement there. "It does nothing to the actual cooling of the turbo". point taken

The cossies have no afterrun, when the engine is switched off everything stops. So i suppose water is very beneficial on the Audi as it keeps pumping to remove heat from the turbo.

I let my car cool down properly every time so the afterrun is not an issue for me.

              Mihnea,

Would you advise against such a turbo then?
What kind of power would expect this to be able to realistically push out?

I thought that Greg was also running a 26/27 #6 and that was good for around 400??

Thanks for advice / help guys

As long as I don't know what hot side this turbo really has, I won't venture into advising for or against this turbo... too many variables, really!

Greg's 26/27#6 is good for up to 380 HP, more than that puts a lot of strain on the turbo and it will eventually break, mainly because of the too high backpressure generated by the small hot side and RS2 EM... FWIW, Greg's turbo only did 330 or so HP on the dyno, IMO because of the too restrictive exhaust/stock cats...

                Cheers,

After reading this thread, I would like to find out more about the K26/27 (water and oil cooled) that I have on my shelf. Is there a posting out there that gives information on the diameters of the turbines, as well as the number that each represent? Thanks...

The water cooled bit is a bit misleading, how can a small bore hose ever carry enough water to cool the turbo? It can't!
The water system was only added to the turbo because it was found that on finishing their journey most owners couldn't be bothered to allow the turbo to cool down.
The water cooled bit is only there to help the bearings when the car is switched off, if your after run pump system is working correctly.
When driving there is no difference between the oil and water cooled turbo's.
The problem arises when the owner with an oil cooled turbo fails to arrive at his (or her!) destination and has not driven the last mile or 2 at a reduced rate and then allowed the turbo to spool down.

So putting this turbo on an RS2 EM with one of Marco's downpipes, and a full custom exhaust with no CATs, what would you say this would push out?

Its certainly something im going to consider as the price is too good to just dismiss.... I was looking at this turbo anyway but with the watercooled part too.

I dont usually drive my hard most of the time but usually allow the car to cool before turning it off anyway

                      Thanks guys

That's exactly what I was meaning Corey, the watercooled turbo brings nothing to performance but only to reliability. The system is very smart because when the afterrun pump/relay/thermoswitch actually work, they can help go past 300.000 miles on the same turbo...

****, time for a new manifold and turbo.
I know of a oil cooled KKK27/29 (i think) for sale soon, would this be a bit overkill?? I can get it for good money. Or should i just have a #8 exhaust housing fitted?
