    Fault code 00561

Just had the car serviced. Pulled the following codes
00561 mixture adaptation lower adaptation limit(mul.) not reached
00561 mixture adaptation adaptation limit(add.) exceeded

These cleared and did not return following a brief test drive.

In the last 12 months I have replaced the MAF & lambda. Before the lambda change I had the former code. Pulled ecu fuses after doing both jobs.

Do I consider another MAF or do I need to look at the fuel system. If the fuel system, what do I look at first ? fuel pressure regulator ? fuel pump ? injectors

Overall I suspect the car runs rich due to low mpg & sooty exhaust which ? points away from low fuel pressure towards MAF ??

If its not MAF or lambda (unlikely if they are fresh) then all's left is the fuel pump, filter or the fuel pressure regulator - or lots of crud in the injectors themselves. The latter is unlikely of course all at once like that.

What chips are you running ?
Do you always run the same fuel ?

The other possibility is something like air or water temp sensors giving bad info to the ECU - causing it to overfuel all the time beyond the adaptation limits.

Was the correct lambda probe and MAF definitely fitted last time round ?

        Thanks Paul
Standard chips now (brief period with custom Mihnea remap)
        Shell V power always
Interesting you mention sensors as the G62 was replaced this service (never got round to checking it even after getting a multi meter). All other sensors have been replaced except MFTS as previous trial disconnected showed no difference in mpg/performance.
The lambda & MAF were OEM via vagparts fitted by me. You may recall my lambda (new 2004) was contaminated.
        Fuel filter done.

I will recheck the codes ASAP but FPR & pump are looking possible. Anything else that would ponit to them ?

Fuel consumption was better today over 200 miles but I have had 'false dawns' like this before ..........!

Oh of course, if the vacuum tree is leaking then that will affect the fuel pressure too. Worth a check of the hoses, T's and clips that link the FPR at the rear of the IM. BIt of a long shot to be honest but worth eliminating if nothing else.

Oh and the other thing - are you burning any more oil than normal - that could throw off the lambda readings - so would a faulty PCV system if its spewing too much fumes through the system.

Yes - doh - mixture adaptation faults may just be a good old air leak... You could be sucking unmetered air in after the MAF and the ECU is chucking in extra fuel to try and compensate for it.

I am using oil but to no great extent. I cleaned & replaced the PCV system a couple of years back.

Unlikely to be fuel pump as it will normally under fuel when failing. So FPR or air-leak sound most likely (or temp sensor also worth considering). Lots of trial an error. Really need someone elses healthy S2 and start swapping parts until you've tracked it down. Bare in mind that new parts are no gaurantee of good parts.

Thanks. If you mean inlet air temperature sensor that is new. I will look for leaks and check/replace the FPR.
New not always good would be my concern with the MAF

No I took it to Harrogate Audi (folks live there) as Sytner Audi have introduced a loyalty card with 50% off MOT 10% off parts provided & fitted 20% off labour.

I would use Witherspoon again in Edinburgh.

recently got the same code as well.Erased it and the next day got the lamda probe code.Erased that one and now runs fine.Living here i would assume that the problem could have been poor fuel quality as i too have changed MAF,lambda, all temp and air sensors,no oil burning etc. Also recently replaced the flame deflector of the PCV and when i checked it again it was very clean.

I would like to know however, how do you clean the PCV system?i would like to give it a thorough clean up.

I checked the hoses, repositioned the flame guard & replaced the PCV. Not much contamination, so I did not do any more

                            HI Al,
I also have this code, and 537 oxygen sensor control.
I have like you replaced lambda, maf,N75, mfts. checked all hoses, no boost leaks.
Just don't see what else can contribute to mixture.
if it is down to fuel pressure, whats it supposed to be? will be fun connecting a pressure gauge to get a reading!

                              Need some more help here.
Under the IM there has always been oil residue. Today I found fresh oil residue between the two alloy oil breather pipes covers. Its difficult as space is tight but if you wedge your finger between the two there is oil. The usual suspect short U pipe attached to the PCV seems OK. I had replaced the PCV last year.
I suspect there is a small split or hole in the breather system which would explain, I think

                              3 fault codes above ?

                              5 lambda contamination ?
Where do I start re finding the culprit ? Can the tubing over the alloy breather pipes be removed to see the pipes ?
Am I on the right track or not ?
