Al,
as mentioned previous, mine tied up with the poor condition and subtle leak under the clamp on the maf-turbo hose, I cleaned up both lambda connections at the bulkhead previous to the find, might be worth a look.
I'm sure I the error for a while before finding the culprit, but TBH it never seemed to affect the performance or fuel economy

Thanks Eric. Just replaced the MAF to turbo with a samco. Took me hours. What do you think about the oil contamination around the breather tubing under the IM. I had done the PCV last year & have cleaned the area with the intention of watching the situation?Alastair

might be daft question but when you clear the error, does it come back straight away,
bit of PITA to keep checking/clearing codes, just interested if takes a while to reappear, or it's conditional on revs/useage etc, you using vag-com to clear errors or just pulling the fuses ?, you had a look at lambda condition recently ?
p.s.
I've changed that maf/turbo hose that often , I think I can do off/on one in around 30 mins and get it off with all the bits attached, you any chance of making it to Crieff next Sunday ?Comment

Thats a question I cannot answer. The codes were found at service a month ago. Cleared & did not come back following a quick test drive.
I have not checked them since..really need to get vagcom now I am doing some work on the car myself.
Did the lambda end last year. The old one was done in 2004 when I got the car. It was brown with a partial covering of white fluff !. Two explainations oil contamination & coolant ??? but nothing to suggest gasket failure OR the b*ggers never changed it.
Crieff is a maybeAlastair

Hi Al,
I have just changed the temp sensor on the back of the head,
Car seems better at cold start, Steep hill away from work was always slow to get going, not tonight!
I will wipe my 561 and see how it goes, was also quicker of boost, almost like it was too rich before.
Fingers crossed thats the culprit!Rob..

Well still have 561!
So today I tested the fuel pressure. supposed to be 3.8 to 4.0 bar at tick over.
Mine is ever so slightly over 4.0 bar, give the throttle a blip and 4.4 bar!
So I have ordered one from Andrew Pages as they are on back order at the stealers.
8 quid cheaper also!
It arrives on thursday so I will let you know if it sorts it.Rob..

The car goes well with the samco MAF to turbo which I suspect is due to the OEM collapsing under vacuum (metal bracing hoop displaced).
Still not re checked codes but if cleared it may be due to the OEM hose collapsing therefore reducing air intake under boost & the ECU compensating with extra fuel. Only a theory tho..............Alastair

Am I being ignored here? or is it just me....

Go on, what have you ordered. I guess a FPRWell still have 561!

Hold on... The FPR is spec'd for 3.8-4.2bar on the ABY. Lets call it 4bar, but with the engine idling with manifold pressure at -0.5bar you should see 3.5bar fuel pressure as the FPR delivers fuel at 4bar ABOVE the manifold pressure.
So at 1.5bar boost you have 5.5bar fuel pressure - keeping you at 4bar above manifold. If you got ~4bar at idle then the fuel pressure is deffo too high and thats why the mixture is beyond the adaptation limits of the ECU.
