Anyone here ever used a charge cooler in place of the usual intercooler if so can you let me know which is the better system. With space being an issue on my series 2 Cq was thinking of using a chargecooler but thought I would ask around before committing. Thanks

Depends what you’re using it for? I had a charge cooler on my 1.8t corrado.
They work really well for street use. But you stand a chance of heat soak if your at a stand still for too long (when no air is passing over the pre-rad) but that depends on your swirl pot size and config too. The swirl pot was huge on my car so I never had an issue. I used mine at Santa pod and had really good results.
I will say on some think like a track day where the air is constantly moving that a FMI is more efficient, the extra weight from the water and bottles can be a big minus and the complexity also.
But IMO there great. There have been some good developments in the last few years.
My mate that runs 1.8t lotus exige swears by this company.
Seem to be hot in the drag seen also...s2 new project

I had a charge cooler on my old SAAB 900 T16s abbott tuned car. Great with the poor siting & size of the OEM intercooler. However bit of a problem when it the coolant froze one cold scottish night & seized the pump.
However it was so cold that night that I could not tell it was not working !!!!!! about -20oC showing on temperature gaugeAlastair

Not intending to do anything else to the engine other than fit the 7A exhaust cam and have a re-chip. So am I better staying with the standard cooler or is there a benefit to be had with a chargecooler. Was hoping somone might already have done this!1986 Coupe q - 2281cc 3B, chargecooler, 2.75" exh & downpipe, ported head, water injection, CGR box, modified MD357 turbo, 440cc injectors, high power coil.

Chargercoolers will give more consistent temps than an IC as it's not effected by heat soak or external temperature.
An IC is more efficient but is affected by external air temperature and heatsoak.
Main reason to use a charge cooler is space.
If you go for one the best on the market is the barrel charge cooler by PWR.

water injection is your best bet,can turn it on and off as you please, intake can be brought down to near ambientComment
