If you upgrade the engine so much that you need a bigger MAF than the stock, you actually need a custom chip to extract all of the potensial of the engine.
I would go so far to claim that its potentially dangerous for your engine not to have it mapped if you run a high output.

Mapping the engine goes fearly quickly with the right equipment. It can be done on the road with in a couple of hours. ES-tuning in Norway made a special map which is in my car. It goes all the way up to 8500rpm instead of the stock7000rpm. Great for high-reving engines

Greg_S: Some maniacs here in Norway run close to 8000rpm with hydraulic lifters... I have mechanical lifters with titanium springs

Mihnea: Each degree of preignition is represented with 2 points. So 90 on the ignition map is 45 degrees, 40 is 20 degrees...
I believe the program is called Race, but I've never really taken a hard look. I just drive the car

...and Mihnea. I have no idea of who you are I just ansvered your reply on my 4" MAF-suggestion.
In less than 2 hours on the road we mapped both ignition and fuel on the 8500rpm maps from scratch on my 500hp+ car.

Not sure many folk consider the M5 Maf now, the blow-through or Prj's RS4 conversion seem to be the way to go.
