Removing weight is a great form of tuning, to start with it's free and some of the stuff that can be removed you can sell. Iv put my 3b on a diet and one of the things iv got shot of is the carbon canister along with the centre box, all the aircon and a fair few other odds and sods. Weight is the enemy!!!

You're just trying to be contraversial now... Are you calling me fat ? LOL

I completely understand the weight thing - I've prepped a couple of GpN rally cars in my day and know exactly how important that is... But on a road car that weighs as much as ours the odd saving of a kilo here or there is pretty irrelevant given the power to weight ratio. Its only big removals like aircon which will make a really big impact.

I see the carbon can as a safety feature and as such wouldn't be keen to remove it from a road car. Everyone has their own take on this of course, but I don't accept that a few kilos difference in weight will make the difference from me lying in the ditch or not. Now a kilo of UNSPRUNG mass is a big thing - that effects handling and drivetrain losses....

I'm keeping the A/C, so anything else under the bonnet that isn't really needed is going. As far as I can see the carbon can is purely for emissions regs, so is of no use to me and my dirty old 3B.

Looking at it, I'm not sure if I called you fat, or the car fat. I'll let you decide.

Unsprung mass, now I hear you on that one.

I quite fancy ditching this too, as i think my system is all blocked (starting to get a petrol smell in the car and my filler cap has always hissed when opening.)

That is a very bad atitude. The N80 emissions control system weighs very little and eliminating it would do nothing to improve your car's performance. It would however help to control the emission of raw hydrocarbons via fuel vapour into the atmosphere. As always, I vote that it should be kept, along with the catalytic converters. It is the least you can do to help protect the environment.

The fuel system is closed and the fuel filler cap is supposed to be airtight. As a result, when you remove it after fuel has been pumped from the fuel tank, there will always be a "hiss" as atmospheric air rushes into to the partial vacuum in the tank. In the meantime, the vapours above the fuel in the partially filled tank have been drawn into the engine via the N80 Evaporative Emissions Control valve.

Would this be the same design in a B4 CQ KV engine? I think the model year was '89. I had a CQ that used to reek of fuel and could never find anything leaking etc anywhere. Guessing it was this now. Petrol cap always hissed on that from memory but so does the S2 and I don't get the same smell.

Well I binned my carbon cannister - sorry Dave. I walk 1.5 miles to work though, so I am more conscientious than 99.9% of people.
I takes up a lot of space in the engine bay on a 7A/3B car.

It is very easy to do, for anyone who is interested. Simply remove the 3rd fuel line and all the gubbins in the engine bay. Then take the plastic tank breather line from the fuel tank outlet / grommet under the car and re-route it back from the expansion tank thing in the boot out of the vent in the rear lower quarter, behind the rear bumper. Then use a small stainless breather filter on the end to stop dust & dirt getting in.

i really appreciate your comment it is a hard call to make as due to so many complex manufacturing processes causing issues on a far larger scale. i too am considering the need for this item but the only thing i find against ditching it is the morality of criticizing others for something i may also participate in.

i do drive like a fiend though so if i did less miles per year is this carbon offset

I also pi55 in the ocean.

Who actually services their carbon canisters anyway? Mine was not working when I removed it.

I am pretty sure catalytic converters are bad for the environment anyway, as they increase CO2 output. And we are all told we must cut our CO2 emissions, as they are the biggest enemy.
After all, car taxes are based on CO2 output, not CO, HC or NOx.
So I vote for ditching the cats and banning volcanoes.

Seriously though, on the whole I am pretty kind to the environment. After all, I do mostly drive the most fuel efficient production car ever made. So consider it offsetting.

With the help of a buddy (ok, he made me), I took my carbon canister out last weekend during my AAN swap into my Coupe. I plan on rerouting the line to a small filter but I am still unclear about the check valve. Won't it throw a code if there is no pressure on the valve? Can I just jump the wires together and make the ECU happy to keep my clean bay theme going (or bury the valve, plugged in under the raintray)?
