    Binning Carbon Canister - BTDT?

I've searched quite a bit on this and not really found a categorical answer.
I want to bin the carbon canister in my CQ to tidy up the engine bay a little and to get rid of a useless couple of kg or so of crap
Also the replacement inlet manifold i am polishing up does not have the nipple on it for the carbon canister circuit.

As far as I can tell it is neccessary to leave the valve in place to stop the ECU reading a fault - is that right?
When I binned the canister on my 200sx, i just routed the pipework back on itself effectively plugging the vapour line. What is the done thing on these systems?

Any BTDT for this on the 7A / 3B (they look a similar setup )

Hopefully this thread can be a guide as to how to go about this mod - I can take some pics to support it if i manage to find time to do it at the weekend

    cheers

I don't know if its that easy... The purpose of the carbon canister (AFAIK) is to treat the vented fumes from the fuel tank safely by letting the engine ingest them in a controlled fashion.

In hot weather, the fuel expands and more vapour is released... AFAIK - this is the only route for fumes to escape the tank - it doesn't just vent to atmosphere at the filler neck like other cars. You do not want to be pressurisiing your fuel tank !

IMO - if you delete the carbon canister then you will need to create some way to allow the tank to vent fumes, but not allow it to pour fuel on your head when the car is upside down amidst a pile up on the M42.

The ABYs have the carbon canister located at the front inner wing on the drivers side so it looks a LOT tidier.

      Hmmmm....

on all the jap cars i have owned, the fuel tank is under pressure or vacuum, as there is/was always a good hiss when opening the filler car, air entering the tank.

my thinking it this: as you use fuel, more air will be drawn into the tank than vapour expelled out due to pressure differential when the fuel in the sealed tank is used.... since a full to empty tank will need 60 litres of air to fill the void left by the used fuel. this *must* far outweight any vapour finding its way out throught the carbon canister? Therefore if my thinking is right, the fuel tank is under negative pressure anyway?

The other half of my thinks they must have put the canister in for a reason.

Petrol evaporates all the time, in the good old days cars had breather lines on the fuel tank but with modern emission laws you can’t dump to atmosphere. All the canister does is collect the fumes so they can be burnt off cleanly. No reason why you can’t bin it and vent to atmosphere but i don’t really see the point to be honest.

Your right about jap cars though, they always have a vacuum when you remove the fuel cap.

Alex bin it, Mine went a year or so ago.

Leave the valve pluged in though so the ecu stays happy and vent the fuel tank some where at the rear of the car, maybe under the bumper

            Thanks guys

Did you just re-route the vapour line from where it leaves the tank to the rear then James?

No danger of exhaust heat / flame ignition?

If you that **** about, what happens if your struck by lightening whilst filling up with V power? I expect you disappear into a mushroom cloud.

At the top of the rear bumper there would be little to none chance of vapor igniting. From a cigarette butt.

I binned my one just the other day. Left the valve plugged in though.

I got a bit of help from another forum ember as to what to unplug but basically after removing the Carbon Canister and pipework i went to the boot. Remove the carpet on the right side and unplumbed the air line that runs from the top of the fuel expansion tank to the Carb tank. I removed the one way valve too and then ran some hose to the rear right side of the boot. There is a vent there so now the fumes are getting dumped in to the bumper.

                      No problems yet.

                      HTH.

so at the tank there is 3 lines coming out of the screw cap - send, return and breather (canister) line? just re-route the breather to a *safe* place?

Just be careful with this stuff - I know it looks like unnecesary crap on the surface, but I see it as much as a safety feature rather than some super green environmental thing.
