Guys
Finally got the turbo back yesterday and put the car back together last night (in the pissing rain under a makshhift tent affair made from rope, 2 ladders and 2 wheelie bins and a large tarpualin).
Pretty straight forward apart from connecting the oil and water feed return pipes (under the turbo) - a real pain in the ****. They actually needed to be connected whilst the turbo was loose on the exhaust manifold as once it was all tight the water pipe wouldn't actually reach where it was supposed to go
Anyway put it all back together (following AET recommendation of filling the turbo with oil, cranking the car for 20 secs etc.) and it started first go no problems
Then smoke started pouring out of the exhaust. We let it idle for about 15 mins and the smoke was still there. At this point me and my mate were both pretty disappointed but guessed it may just be crap in the system as the car had sat for almost 2 weeks with open exhaust etc.
Also the turbo's hot side is coated with a anti rust wax (by AET) and this obviously caused **** loads of smoke under the bonnet as it was burining off.
So drove the car home and the smoke disappeared. Started it again this morning and no smoke
Everyhting seems fine, boost all seems to be there so I guess we put it back together OK. It needed coolant topping up last night and again today (about a litre) but this is what it must have lost when the water return pipe on the turbo kept pissing stuff out when we took off and and then when putting it back on. I can't see a leak so here's hoping!
I know this is no big deal to a lot of you guys who do this all the time but I'm pretty made up that it all works fine as this is the first time I've done anyhting like this.
Total cost for a remanufactured turbo, new lambda, new rocker cover gasket, variuous nut bolts and gaskets - £495 fitted. A bit of a bargain I think.
When I've got my computer sorted I'll post a pic of the turbo - AET do an amazing job.
A drive to Stafford and back later today will hopefully give the car a bill of clean health.
Cheers
Leigh
