What a difference a standard Wastegate cover does

    What a transformation!!!

I put the standard wastegate top cover (Audi factory set) on this morning with the original spring and took the car for a blast after warming it up nicely. I floored the throttle at “3250 to 3750 rpm” rev band in top and every time, boost builds up swiftly (No hesitation around 1,3 to 1,7 bar)and peaking around a steady ‘ 2.2 to 2.3 bar’ and not hunting around a rough ‘2.0 to 2.2’ (Instrument cluster reading) and no hesitation at all. The engine runs smoother as well in high boost areas. No hesitation or stutter at all.

Well impressed. Even the MPG has gone up as well on thirty mile run I have just been on, so it will be interesting if I get more than ‘23-24’ on a run and better than ’15 to 16’ around town’

I will now get the car serviced and tuned up since it is now running superbly and it should be able to be set up correctly now. (I will still replace the Oxygen Lambda sensor and the clean out the idle stabilisation valve as both now at 111k)

Many thanks to all for the help.

Yep - the general rule is that when you see a WG that is modified like that one, just remember it is for tying the horse up to!

Now you can "play" with adding a few turns (down) on the WG spring.

“13 to 14mm” in difference in spring height!!!!!!

The issue with the defective top cover was that the previous owner had made the wastegate have about “13 to 14mm” of adjustment sticking out at the minimum setting compared to the standard wastegate top cover.

I placed my original wastegate spring in both the damage wastegate top cover and the standard (Anti tamper cover still in place) top cover and in the damaged one it was sitting proud of the other one by the above measurement. And this takes account that the standard wastegate is adjusted at the factory, so the damaged one had not only the factory setting but the additional extension too.

I am assuming that the ECU was seeing way too much pressure and probably rate of rise too when I occasionally floored it in top and started to control it with the WGFV and that's was what I was feeling in the hesitation, as the boost pressure was totally over the top. (Suppose I am lucky really that no damage has been done.)

The inside of the replacement wastegate cap does not look at all like this but the attached picture should make it obvious what was done and it is exactly as I found it!!!

I know it does not look like much but changing it out transformed the car engine response. The car will get a good blast to Ashford tonight, as I am on nights but tomorrow the ‘ISV’ is coming out and I will clean it out with the carb cleaner I have just bought. (Lambda sensor will arrive next week, which was not cheap £80 +vat for a genuine item, ouch)

It will be interesting to see after all that I have done, if the engine tune up generates more happiness, etc. Then I hopefully see what a well tuned ‘MTM’ chipped car will do!!

Somebody really butchered that huh... The entire upper spring perch is missing by looks of things.
