    Starter Motor (again)

Before i go and buy a new starter, is there any simple reson why it just wont kick in, the engine is just nearing compleation and need to test it, will it make a difference if the earths arent conected on the IM?
I just want to make doubly sure its not me and my wiring, does the ECU have anything to the starter either? Thanks Michael

It was good holding Charge, but yes might just try a different battery not that i dont trust myself but "just in case".
I had all the dash lights and that but there was ntohing at all when i turned the key, also i put 12v across the starter and nothing happened. Does that mean it dead?

Mike iirc hasnt your S2 been off the road for quite a while? Go straight for the other good battery before paying out for the starter... other thing to have a quick gander at is ingition switch behind key try wiggling (tech jargon ) it a bit and check the connections at the back... connections on the starter???

What you mean you put 12V across the starter ?

There is always 12V connected to the big bad starter terminal (and ground via body) - the starter is only energised when 12V is applied to the solenoid device attached to the starter body - thats the signal what comes from the key.

You MUST have all the engine earths attached for the thing to have any real chance of firing into life.

Make sure the main earth cable is attached, without it your going to pull all the current through all the other electrical connections and cause a melt down. You can use a jumper lead to short the main + power and the solenoid to test the unit, just in case the faults with your ignition switch or wiring. Just make sure the car is NOT in gear when you test it!

With main earth attached i put 12v across the solinoid, and nothing, so i assume it is finished! Will wire up everything properly and try the new battery.
Thanks for the help though i'm sliding towards a new starter!
