Had the coil cover off this afternoon just to make sure the spark plugs were tight.
One coil pack has carbon deposits on the bottom, and the lip at the bottom has started to come away.
Another coil pack has a fair bit of oil on the stem...
Any advice?

oil could be from rocker gasket (middle one),is it driving ok? I would be certain before you decide to replace as coilpacks at £60 +Vat each. The wiring tends to be very brittle so perhaps thats the carbon deposit - burnt plastic from the wire
You probably saw the thread last week where the cam cover gasket failed (after a spark plug being loose ). In any event, I strongly suggest that you replace that gasket set. PN is listed in Post 11 in that thread:
yes they are called boots, i sold a set last month! they are by beru, i think you can get them from the usa at £5 each, vagparts also do them a bit more expensive though. i too need to replace the gasket, they cost £28 (including camcover and spark plug rim gasket) lets do a group buy
