    Dodgy rev limiter? or?

I've just taken the car for a test drive with a prospective buyer and all seemed fine until trying to get the car to red line. Everything seemed good in terms of boost but what seemed to be the limiter was cutting in at around 5200rpm. This seemed way low and is a bit of a concern. It was'nt boost cut out or engine dropping revs. It just seemed to bounce at just over 5K rpm and go no further. I've searched the site looking for a similar fault but all I can seem to find is a possible electrical grounding fault or dodgy tach reading? I've no facilities to check fault codes on the car so was planning to get it down to Audi to check out tomorrow. Like I said boost was fine and seemed to come in around 2750-3000 and kept on pulling fine.

    Anyone any ideas?
Standard ABY engine and ECU and the car has just been fully serviced by Audi (which might explain it?)

Sounds like a boost leak (despite what you said) or a coil issue. The rev limiter is programmed to cut the fuel at 7300 RPM. Can't change that easily.

I'd check the obvious stuff first, can u rev above 5.2k at rest ?, check the throttle linkage and check that it's properly adjusted to give you WOT

        Does the same at rest

        Hi Eric,
Car behaves the same at rest, won't go past 5200ish rpm and that was without fullly pressing the accelerator fully down. I'll get a chance to look properly at the basic stuff in the morning as it's a wee bit wet and dark at the moment (I'm a big girl I know)

        Cheers

          Rev counter's on the blink

Well checked out all the obvious stuff and eventually gave up and took it to Audi today. Car was put on their diagnostic kit and she is revving to 7300 before hitting the limiter and sending the right signal to the counter but the counters having none of it.
So it looks like part of the rev counter's gone south, reading around 2K low. So new rev counter on order (ouch!). At least it wasn't anything serious.

I think I need to get my ears cleaned/checked as well, should've been able to tell by the noise that the revs were in the right range.. Shocking.

          Cheers
