20v ur - fan and after-run pump issues?

    Hi all,

Recently, after engine shut down, I could wait by the car and after a few minutes would here a shorting/clicking noise and the sound of the fan coming online, then going off, and back on – etc.
The shorting/clicking sound of the relay could go on for quite a while.
Then, on a different occasion after engine shutdown, the after-run pump would run but without the fan.
Am I right in believing that when the after run pump is running the fan should also be running?

The fan definitely works as I’ve heard it when the engine is running – i.e. – car stationary.

I obviously have a relay problem, but which relay do I go for. There are 2 relays, under the bonnet:
    Fan (eng rad) relay
    Cooling fan relay

Or, is there a separate relay for the after run pump?
If so, does this operate the fan too?

I know there are relays located inside the car, fwd of the glove box, but have not investigated them yet.

    Cheers

There is indeed a seperate relay for the after-run control Chris. And it's in the location you mention, inside the car just ahead of the glovebox.

    It's a tall-ish brown relay IIRC. I think the part no. is 447 965 571A.

Thanks Pete - I have just been looking on my e-t-k-a and this ties up with the PT No you say.
According to the system it says stage 1 fan and water pump.

Still wondering though if the fan should be on with this pump running (ignition off of course).

      Cheers

        Afaik yes it should.

Also I have that relay to change in mine as mine does this but the one I have has 324 on the top with the part no but is actually black instead of brown so seems there was two colours for the relay.

Ah, yes the fan should also run with the pump. It could be the stage 1 fan relay or it's connection, or a connection to the fan itself. (Though it doesn't get hot in traffic I presume?).

The coolant temp always sits steady whilst driving.

That is why it seems so unusual that these events take place after shut down.

The clicking of one of the relays has maybe damaged itself and rendered the fan operating side of it u/s.

The fan definitely works - with ignition on. This must be the stage 2/3 of operation.
Assuming stage 1 is only ignition off?

I would suspect a sensor fault if it were not for the relay shorting sounds.
