S6 starts but won't tick over

My S6 starts but won't tick over, if you take your foot of the throttle it just die's.it will stay running OK with a little throttle. I have looked at most things but with no luck.
The last time I drove the car was about a week ago and it was fine,we have had some very cold and damp weather may be that's it.
Any ideas would be appreciated .

I'd probably say its something related to alex changing around the idle valves, maybe thats playing up.

The other thing to try is providing you can, take it out for a quick spin and get it warmed up to temperature, it could be just like you say where its been standing somethings got damp in it/on it. If you get it up to temp and it will idle fine then you know its nothing serious.

You can then check tommorow if it will start up/idle fine and if not try one of the spare idle valves he has.

TPS or MAF. Check the plugs are ok and connectged properly. A bit of WD40 in there will disperse any water.

My thoughts exactly, especially the throttle potentiometer connection.

I once forgot to plug mine back in after changing the alternator regulator (93 S4) - car would start and idle but wouldn't take any throttle. (WTF??!!) Opened the hood, checked visually -saw TPS plug unplugged, reconnected plug (Duh) - everything cool again.

Also, on the C4 UrS, the intake air temp (IAT) sensor (on the throttle body) and idle stabilization valve (ISV) have the SAME plugs. If you happened to have both of them off, you may have reconnected them in the wrong order. Easy fix.

If it happens again i would do a output test with vag.com to source the problem

Same problem to day,car wont tick over when cold.I have tried wd40 but it has'nt worked this time.
I will swap the maf over from my s2 an see what happens, its farly new so I don't think its that.
I have tried dissconecting the ISV but its still the same.I don't have vagcome, so is it possible to read the fault codes on a 1995 uk S6, it only has two connectors under the bonnet and not three,so how would I do that.
I would appreciate anyone may have.

                    Many Thanks LOU

                      You could get hold of one of these, it worked a treat on my '94 UrS4;

I bought a cheap lead off Ebay that came with "a free" adapter to convert the standard Vagcom lead to the older 2 connectors. Think it cost £12 ish delivered from China and took 5 days to arrive. I only bought it to test the waters with what you can do but it is great...

I use standard Vagcom 4.09 software that is free from Ross-Tech. As downloaded the software is really only any use for diagnosis because the adaptation is limited (you can not reset the service indicators on an S6 for example) but the software can be easily tricked into allowing full use. I would strongly recommend giving this a try, very very useful software.

When funds allow I will be getting a full blown lead and software direct from Ross-Tech (to allow coms to the latest VW / Audi cars on CanBus). I hate spending money on software and what appear to be simple leads but this pays for itself with the first use and is worth the investment every bit as much as a decent socket set.

Thanks for the advise I have found the culprit, at least I hope I so. I swapped the ISV over from the S2 and it curred the problems I have replaced the old one and the car runs fine at the moment.

                          Many thanks LOU

Mine does it occasionally to. In my case it is always due to the ISV. On one occasion i was tapping it with a screwdriver and you could hear the revs lifting with every tap.

I periodicaly squirt some WD40 in it, its not played up for ages.
