Main rad fan on (for ever)..can you help ?

Tried pulling both fan fuses ( and it still ran ..(why?)) then tried the top central relay (no 241) and swapped with the other ( no 241) relay on the RH side of the fusebox. The fan will then stop until the engine is restarted. Engine is hot - but not frying. I assume the thermo switch has died in the closed circuit (safe) position. Can you help with PN or alternative diagnosis please?. Car is '95 ABY Coupe. Every time I think Ive got it sorted...
    Thanks, James.

Most likely the thermo switch has gone s/c as you mention.

Part number is 191 959 481 C for the dual thermo switch (3-pin device).

I cant tell what speed your fan is running it, but there are three scenarios here...

Fan SPeed 1 - AFterrun mode is controlled by relay 3 (three) in the main fusebox. If this is active then either the relay has jammed on, or the afterrun controller (relay 14 in the footwell) or the thermoswitch is locked on.

Fan speed 2 - Triggered by thermoswitch F18 in radiator or when aircon is activated. This uses Relay 11 (eleven) in the main fusebox. Thermoswitch or relay might be stuck

Fan speed 3 - Extremely noisy this one at fastest speed. Triggered by thermoswitch F54 in the radiator - its packaged in same 3-pin device as F18. Relay controlling this speed is number 18 (eighteen) in the footwell fusebox.

HTH - I'm looking at schematic here. Will try to see if its online anywhere...

          Thanks Paul.
Hard to tell, but fanspeed sounds loud from outside the car. Having swapped the two (identical) relays, I cannot believe they have both "gone" at the same time ( esp as it only re occurs once the engine is re-started having pulled the LH one ). Will try the thermo switch tomorrow ( tapping it gently did not effect a cure ). Local Audi shop all chrome glitz and no parking.....

This one is for the V6 engine so doesn't show the afterrun wiring, but you'll get the idea... http://s2central.net/80TDi/Schematic...C-45/45-09.jpg

If pulling all the relays doesn't stop it, nor S15 either then it must be the afterrun thermoswitch.

Thanks again. T Switch still looks favourite. Hoping not too much coolant will run down my arm swapping the new one in ... ( certain WS manual " drain the coolant first" )....

Its a PITA to get at alright... Just disconn one of the wires to it 1st - that should kill the fan if the switch has failed ON. Do remember this is a switched LIVE feed - strange but true. As for changing it - I can see the sight now... You unscrew the old one and need fifteen attempts to thread the new one in - pishing out a liter of coolant in the process - LOL.

Update, but not solved. No S20 fuse in the main fusebox (!).. Ive had the car for nearly 6 years without this kind of cooling problem. ( aux rad removed, new main rad, new thermostat, aux pump replaced, water pump replaced when belts changed, coolant changed 3 times etc etc ). Installed correct 30A fuse (in S20) and all seems well - but different. Warm up seemed quicker and screenwiper jets are far stronger(?) It's lashing down again so no more underbonnet stuff today. Wierd....Got it hot enough in traffic (90C plus) to set the fan off and it ran for 10 seconds or so and shut off as normal. No afterrun issue.

BTW I have pro installed aftermarket CAT 1 fitted and fuse # 19 is also not there ( audi alarm/immob ) - I assume this is usual ?
