    Volvo T5 I5

I was chatting to someone the other day that told me that in 1995 Audi gave up their I5 cylinder block to Volvo as Audi was concentrating on their V6. This block was then used in the Volvo T5. Does anyone know if these blocks can be still used as an Audi block or did they make too many revisions for it to be used.
After a quick scout arround the only info I can find is that they bored the block out to 83mm and have changed the stroke to 90mm. I can't find a photo of the I5 volvo block on it's own to look at the differences. I found a pic of a Volvo head gasket and it looks almost identical to the Audi one. Also the hydraulic lifters look identical.. This is about as much as I can find.....

Might be an interesting route for high power output engines further down the line

I've also heard that story before...
      but I found this:
Introduced in 1998, from then until 2000 the Volvo S70 was simply an updated 850. Debuting over a decade ago in the Volvo 850, the V70 and S70 used the same 5-cylinder Porsche-designed engine.

      Dont know how reliable though.

There's a few forum thread covering this with one member modding a T5 block with quite detailed pics.

The two aren't compatible for parts

Volvo used the Audi sourced I5 10V Tdi engine in the 850 and the V70. Think they were all the 140 versions too. I don't think there is any similarity between the petrol Volvo 20V and our beloved 20V! Well other than the number of cylinders and valves!

This is the information I have been supplied.

…. In the 90’s VW sold Volvo the rights to the 2.5Tdi 5 pot diesel engine and also the rare 3.0Tdi straight six. Shortly after Volvo took the S2’s 2.2 20vT, gave it an alloy block, changed the capacity to allow for the emissions regulations, which caused a drop in power (hence why the first 2.5T Volvo was only 220BHP when the old 2.2 was 230 back then).

It’s these emssions changes and development that Audi didn’t want to pay for due to their input into their now common range of V engines. Volvo did the expensive work on this but benefitted from using Audi`s existing engine design to adapt, rather than design from scratch. Now, a further evolution of that engine is in the Focus Asbo!

All you have to do is go down your local library and get the Haynes manual for the 850 or V70, after all might as well get someone out of your council tax.
When I first heard those rumours thats what I did. Once you see the construction of the Volvo engine you will see major differences.
Its certaintly probable that Audi or another company were used for consultancy and that certain components are common, like the tappets, which are used in quite a few other engines. But the major components are not interchangable.

Not totally on topic but it's precedent example of Volvo "borrowing" VAG technology:

"Volkswagen reacted quickly; in 1979, the Perkins engine was replaced with a diesel engine that had proved successful on the Volkswagen Golf - while adding two more cylinders. The 1.6l four-cylinder engine became a 2.4l six-cylinder delivering 55 kW (75hp). Unlike other diesel engines in this performance class, the assembly stood out for its balanced vibration behaviour and pleasing acoustics. The engine worked so convincingly that Volvo adopted it for the Volvo 200 series, and were therefore able to offer the first passenger car with a six-cylinder diesel engine."

Thats right there was a 6cyl with Audi rings on the side of the block, i guess the volvo is the only car that engine would fit into
