    Relocating the MAF

    Hi People

I'm planning on relocating my MAF to the pressure side and basically need advice on what's involved etc. I'll need to do the mandatory 1k drive after the engine rebuild and would like advice also on what i'll need to do to get the car running well enough to drive before the remap. Any engine bay shots you've got that show pressure side installations would be helpful too

    Cheers

If you're running a reverse inlet then the best place would be between the IC outlet and TB. If your pipe work is all 3" then the MAF will just slot in, if not then you'll need some straight or bent reducer pipes.

Here's some shots of my old setup and my new one.

Old setup with RS2 airbox and stock inlet.

Zoom in to the bung for the aux rad hose and you can see it just to the right.

        Close up.

Nice work there chaps, did you keep the bore the same as the MAF or did it all get sorted out when mapping?

Thanks lads, gives me something to think about. I initially assumed the whole plastic section of the MAF had to be connected to the IC/IM tubing. What happens to the gauze then?
Looks like you're both using Carstens IM (that's what i've got also)? How did you get your throttle cable extended or what did you use as a donor?

                  Cheers

I think to get it working that's what I'd do mate, then if you get the urge then do the neater installs like Dave and Darren. Get rid of the gauze and use an RS2 MAF. I've ditched the downstream one, just means taking a bit more care when you remove the airbox but you won't have that problem.

Bo has recently sorted his throttle cable, suggest you give him a shout or read his thread.

Give me a shout if you want a hand, if I'm up to it I'll pop over the Downs and have a play.

I don't have a gauze either side of the MAF. I'm using the original throttle cable, extended with a little clamp. You can see it just above the cable roller on the IM.

Bore is the same as original, although Corey's thinking about widening it slightly around the MAF to slow the air flow down near the wire.

If you change the bore then do you not change the response characterstics of the MAF unit to air flow?

There are issues with scaling if mass increases. I don't really know how far he's got.

You do. some times however, particularly with a BB turbo, you need to slow down the air flow (it will need mapping to suit) mine occasionally hits the boost limit and its basically down to air speed through the MAF as the boost limit thresholds are lifted beyond what it kicks in at.

Russ, if you need silicon Samco hoses then have a look at Rallydesign.co.uk, they're the cheapest I've found for genuine stuff.
