    Engine concern...

Well everything has been running OK for a while and after just passing my MOT I was looking forward to upgrading several items.....no such luck...

having just been "pursued" by a standard yaris, it tried it's luck....when I gave it the usual foot to the floor it got to about 3500-4000 and started, what seemed like, missing....the whole car hesitated....tried it again after backing off....still the same...

after turning off to a quieter road, and no poxy speed camera's on, tried it again...
just the same now around 3000....a sinking feeling came over me....and the wife...how much this time?.....I love my car and don't be grudge it a penny but you know how it is

The car has had the 1.8 coilpack conversion done....just had some other bits done at MRC so if anything was a-miss Doug would of seen it and sorted it....so it is something
new....could it be the POS?...this is something I am still learning about...as is I5 mechanics.....or something as simple as needs new plugs etc.....

    guys-n-gals...any idea's??.....

    any advice is really appreciated....

pos or coilpacks, sometimes they just let go other times intermitantly play up. had the same on mine. if its had the 1.8t coilpacks then there shouldnt be a pos fitted iirc.
the 1.8t coilpacks are renowned for over heating and not lasting long.
perhaps it could just be a mammouth air leak?
I bet it idles fine? coilpacks dont tend to play up too much unless under load.
    any other symptoms?

could be lots of different things.Does it seem to go on 4 cylinders?could be a coil pack.Usually harsh hesitation relates to them, when intermittent small cut like responce could be WGFV,lamdba,MAF,boost leak,etc...

it does idle fine......mammouth air leak you say.... would that not cause a problem all the time not just at the upper levels of accelerating??....

got my boost gauge on order....

it runs fine normally but only on 'give it some' it decides not to play ball....
it's got an RS2 MAF on...and thats probably only 6 months to a year old....

sounds like what I have at the moment.... a failed coil will give you "vibration" type hessitation. Boost leak you will notice once the guage shows 1.2 bar and there is a lack of "vibration" wind your windows down and accelerate... You might hear a snake under the bonnet. I'm having my snake taken out on monday

Before you bail on the 1.8t coils, check to see if they are all snug down on the plugs. If they are installed correctly, they still down about 6 mm into the cam cover. Try removing one (a little twist and a stiff pull). Check the plug for tightness (22 lb ft - 30 Nm, tighten only). Then remove the rubber seal near the top of the 1.8t coil pack and then re-install the coil pack (temporarily). You should hear and feel the coil pack snap onto the plug. Measure the distance down to top of the coil pack and then remove. Add the rubber seal back to the 1.8t coil pack and reinstall, making sure that the coil pack is all the way down (based on your measurement). Repeat for the other four cylinders.

Then test again. If there are still problems, at least you will know its not a loose plug or coil pack.

1.8T coils are notorious for breaking down in I5 engine.
All quattro products have been dermatologically tested, and are safe for daily use.

RS2 MAFs arent more robust than S2 MAFs.They tend to break down unexpectadly. But since it is quite new,i would check the coil connections as UrS4 says

Notorious? Exqueeze me? Back that up with data.

They do fail but no more frequently than a 1.8t. UNLESS you track the UrS.

Then the heat kills the little beggers.

silly question time, Dave......if they haven't been touched, why should they have moved.... after been in the engine for this long then suddenly move sounds un-usual, does it not....
one thing I will say is the power output has been going 'downhill' for the last few weeks.....none of the usual "kick" in the back sensation...then I started to think I had a boost leak, hence buying the gauge....

could a "dodgy" plug lead to the same problem?.....

thanks for your help so far folks.....
