    Changing cambelt costs/recommended garages

Mine is due for a change at some point soon, so just wondering what sort of money I would need to budget for it?
I would rather travel somewhere that has experience in doing them for obvious reasons.
I see Lion Garage has been recommended in afew threads, all of them are resonably local to me, so they seem the top option at the moment?
I am 30 mins from Northampton/45 from Hinkley/45 to Leicester/50 to Birmingham etc

Your looking at around £300 or so for the cambelt job, depending on sundries.

You might also want to get the crank oil seal, crank sprocket, cam oil seal and pulley checked/replaced, as well as the usual suspects of the water pump, tensioner etc.

Do it yourself, that way you know its been tightend properly, and you save a fair bit of money. You just need to borrow a locking tool and follow the BTDT posts on hear

I knew someone would say that!
I have never changed one on a simple engine, let alone an S2, it is not something I would even think about doing myself!

It's the one job I would pay for as if you do it wrong it's a lot of money to correct.

400-500 quid I'd imagine. It cost a fair bit in parts alone.

are the waterpumps under tention on the 20vs? i know on the 10v they are the tentioners aswell so should really be replaced with the cambelt, so i'm told. it all adds up unfortunately

They need to be replaced every cambelt service anyhow they are about £120 from Audi.

Just done this on my 3B and yes water pump used as tensioner on these engines only.
Made my own tool to hold the pulley in position whilst getting the ever so slightly tight centre bolt out. Not a major job so long as everything is marked up prior to starting and best to put everything at TDC too just to be sure.

Also if your bottom pulley has a lot of wobble then the balancer thingy needs changing as mine did at £330!

I would get someone to do it for you

TBH its an easy enough job on the IL5 as long as you have the locking tool. Unless you go to someone who knows the S2 you're better doing it yourself and knowing its been done properly, i know as the garage who had previously done the job on my old coupe did a piss poor job and the crank bolt was hand tight and the woodruff key was shattered!
I was a cambelt virgin previously too, honestly its not as bad as i looks / sounds mate

I thought the ABY had a separate tensioner, not using the water pump like the 7A / 3B?

Definately replace the crank sprocket IMO, i have seen a broken woodruff key both times I have done this job, for the sake of an extra £30 its not worth taking the chance

I'm having mine done right now at TC Garage clost to gatwick and this is the rough quoute that they gave me:
                        1) Cambelt (including belts, tensioner, water pump, anti-freeze and
                        labour)
= £330 + VAT. I have assumed your model has aircon. If not it will
                        be a
                        few quid cheaper.

                        2) Thermostat - The parts are approx £14.50 + VAT and because it's a 20V
                        we
expect the job to take about 0.5 - 1hr. Our labour rate is £56/hr +
                        VAT.

I had mine done at the Lion garage in Hinckley.
The wizard has plenty of experience with the I5. :mischeif:

I'd budget around £5-600 if you want to replace things like water pump and pulley.

                          Have a look here
