oil flushing the block to clean breather

Ive just taken off the block breather hose which goes to my catch tank and its blocked with gunk and oil and all sorts of crap.

If i take the sump off and flush and oil flush solution down that block breather will that do any harm? i cant see any other way to clean it out without pushing all the crap into the engine.

Also will the sump come off without having to remove any other big pieces of kit? undertray is already off so thats not an issue.

    cheers

    .

You'll need to drop the front of the subframe i believe...

If you take the sump off you will need to replace a few parts,

The two sump gaskets: 074 103 609 F, one under and one ontop of the 'baffle' as well as a few other bits and bobs iirc.
Like the washer that holds the oil pick up pipe fasteners in place.

Cant see any reason why what you have posted above wouldn't work though.

Dont forget that the sump also crews in to the rear crank seal case, not sure how easily assessable this is with out the gearbox off but I'd assume that a long 5mm allen keys would do the trick.

      Good luck

Edit: Its also worth taking off the oil pickup pipe and cleaning out the inlet side of it as i bet there will be a bit of crap stored in there too.

Are these catch/cyclone tanks liable to gunge build up cos of water vapour collecting in there ?

The only advantage I can see in the stock system is that cos all the fumes and vapours are recirc'd that they get burnt off (well the water vapour does but the heavier oil droplets end up at the bottom of your intercooler and you suffer higher air temps and mixture contamination with the stock breather).

I had one fitted for about a year with out any problems, It even had a flame trap fitted and that was still fairly clean when i last checked it . Any condensation and gunge build up was stored in the drainage tube out of the bottom of the breather tank.

Aye thats my point... If the drainage tube at the bottom is routed back to sump... isn't that going to dump the collected water vapour and gunge into the sump as well ?

Smells to me like the drain tube shouldn't connect back to sump - at least not until the engine is hot enough to avoid the water vapour scenarios.

Your defiantly right there. I would never drain back to sump, at least not from a metal catch tank that is prone to attracting condensation.
The 1ft tube that was on my tank had to be emptied every 2 or 3 months regardless of the amount of driving as it was mainly condensation that was filling it up.

The stuff that came out looked like devil sporn

I think mat is referring to the breather feed that comes of the 30mm exit on the block though, as supposed to the drain/return tube.

I agree, the whole point of the crank case breather is to get the water vapor out in the first place.

If the breather port on the block is full of dried up crud you can vacuum it out, a standard vacuum cleaner hose fits over it perfectly.

its pretty wet gunge at the moment im not sure a vacuum would suck it out.

i cant believe that the subframe has to be dropped? thats such a **** design, never heard of having to do that on any other car.

i dont have the catch tank plumbed back into the sump, just collects. and yes bo is right its the large 30mm block breather that is bunged up with crap.

Bo. i take it when the g/box is connected there are guidance holes left to be able to get those allen bolts out still? as it looks like the box will cover them up.

Yes there are two holes, Only prob is that iirc the subframe gets in the way.
Double check this though, just get under you car and see if you have access to the sump - belhousing line or if the subframe is to tight to it. I cant remember tbh.

                      Good luck.

Not got a lot of experience with cars then????
Foook me , 99% of modern cars will need the subframe dropped to do ANY work underneath- on a modern production line the engine is fitted to the subframe/bed and then the bed is fitted to the car with suspension/brakes etc...

Some modern cars, (Begin with F, end in D) you need to take the box off to remove the sump- and still have to drop the bed...................

How bad is the gunk? put a decent oil flush in the oil, drain oil & filter, refill and check the oil pressure is within the specs-

How often was/is the oil changed and what with, if you don't know drop the sump and clean it all out as well as the pick up-If it is really badly gunked are the rings starting to go?? Get a cylinder leakage test carried out and see what the % leak is.

It will also highlight any valvetrain or head gasket problems too.

ive just done the head gasket so thats fine.

i remember taking a sump off my mates nissan 200sx and that didnt need the frame dropping. mostly only worked on old cars where its not so much of a problem.

ive had the s2 for nearly 4 years and the oil gets changed every 6 months without fail, been putting in silkolene pro s as its not petroleum based so better for turbo apps, of recent i have been putting in millers though. seems just as good an oil.

im a bit worried about putting in oil flush as it might push all the crap around the engine. it only seems to be the 30mm block vent thats blocked up as when i took off the pcv system that was all blocked so was backing up toward to engine. now thats all gone i can clean it out.

Cant you get something in there to suck it up with? Like a clear plastic hose somehow attached to a hover? Shurly if your carfull you could suck up most of the crap without having to remove the sump.
