    breaking 300hp barrier

well my car is still in it's very early stages but i was just wondering-what are the essential upgrades for breaking past 300hp?
after reading countless threads i've come to the conclusion of:
at least 2.75" turbo back exhaust
    Rs2 exhaust manifold or similar
different turbo-be it garett/holset etc etc
    a decent intercooler
either airbox modifications or an Rs2 airbox
    ecu mapping to suit
    3.0 bar map sensor
    fuel pressure regulator

please give me any more pointers that you may have(theres probably something i've missed)
i understand that the 3b injectors flow more than aby ones and that the fuel pump should hold 300+hp

the only real concern is what kind of power/torque can the stock internals safely take?
i don't want to go too mad as i'm neither rich or prepared to fix broken parts every other week-i just want a quick, fun and reliable car (although i have been spoilt with speed with my previous motor-a nissan 300zx twin turbo running around 400hp)

    anyway,as i said,your comments welcome...

    Hi,

Good thread - one i was looking to post up myself

To break 300bhp as you say you will need a different turbo. RS2 and GT3071 are the more common upgrades. The other essentials are down to the amount of torque/power you have it mapped to.

the RS2 turbo produces lots of torque so new rods are a must if you want the most out of it, whereas its said the 3071 can be run at almost full pelt on stock rods (See Ross's project 400 thread). IIRC the stock rods can take ~500nm/torque.

Most of the other points are down to getting the most out of the turbo rather than getting past 300bhp - intercooler, airbox, MAF, EM, IM, rods, injectors and fuel pump are all good things to upgrade.

The RS2 route is a very well proven, bolt-on route, with lots of mid-range torque, but alot feel it is pretty expensive for "old technology" and you can reach alot more power with relatively less cash. You would typically be looking at 360-380bhp with ~420lb/ft torque with a full rs2 setup.

HTH (others please feel to correct if ive missed something..)

      lots

of things you can do, im am surely past the 300hp barrier and im an now, trying out some different stuff. Im currently running,
T04e garret hybrid, s2(3b) injectors at 4.5bar, str manifold, AFPR, 3" all the way exhaust, 3bar map sensor, 1bar of boost. Going up to 1.5bars, and shes running better on 1bars now, than she was on 1.5bars with kkk24.

As far as i know you don't have to chnge the rods on a RS2 set up. The RS2 as standard has the same rods as a ABY,which i think will be the same 3B..........

I want more power too but time will tell

Good luck with the project and if you need a good exhaust come and see mine, got it done at a place in Leeds.
Just some finishing touches to do now

i noticed you said that the IM was a good upgrade-from what i understand the 3b flows very well indeed so that would stay.turbo wise the offerings from garett and similar companys cost a lot more-but as you say they don't produce the rod bending torque of the old school kkk units-and spool up would be much quicker-a fact which appeals to me as i want driveability and responsiveness-so thats the way i may go,i just want to be sure what other components need changing-avoiding internals if possible
it's a case of getting the most out of the car with the least work needed but staying safe and reliable with it

Big lee M-i wouldn't have thought you'd need to change the rods on stock Rs2 spec but anymore and i've heard that it may not last long.from what i understand 3b engines are at a loss with weaker shell bearings than aby/rs2 engines(i don't know about rods though)-i think i might go with a newer garett turbo-just because i won't get as much lag and theres less risk to the internals.
oh and i mite have to have a looksie at your zorst'-where was it done?

Place called superflow on Geldard Road 2.75" cat back sounds really nice not to loud on tick over and when crusing and a nice sporty note when giving it some.

well i've heard good and bad things about superflow-a mate had an exhaust done there and it's gone rusty in the space of six months so i assume the stainless they use is a lower grade than what you'd like-if it's guaranteed who cares though
as long as the bends are smooth and it doesn't blow it's fine by me-just out of interest how much did it set you back?

better turbo and a good remap will take you well past 300 without any exotic pipework and/or intercoolers

well i know that the turbo is the limimting factor-just not sure about the rest of the parts-theres a lot of debate about the k24-i'm sure that 300hp may be achievable but the stock k24 would fry in no time pushing that much power-anyway i'm off to bed-too much beer and not enough sleep!

actually it is the other way around about the rods.If you use GT3071R then you probably need to change the rods.If you go for RS2 setup, then you dont need to,just beware of very early high boost which may cause rod issues. It comes down to mapping actually.
fpr can be either S2 or RS2,doesnt make all that difference, and then just source a cheap used rs2 intercooler just to be able to keep the air as cool as possible so as not to loose much power

                        Sonic, r u sure?

I would have thought that the Garret GT3071 would definitely have bent standard rods if it was mapped to give of its best on the torque front, and that standard rods would be OK with a re-mapped RS2?

Perhaps someone who knows what they're talking about will make a post and inform the rest of us who've posted on this thread so far?

                        Kind regards.

The 3071 would as mentioned above if set up to its full potential definately damage the rods.
