Thoughts on developing a LS2 Monaro coil-based ignition

Based on the previous work that I did on figuring out how to use the 1.8t coil packs on our cars ( http://forums.audiworld.com/s4s6/msgs/195907.phtml ) and the work of two AudiWorld listers, 450exc115 and lloyd21, there is an option to 034's HO coil near plug system, in this case using inexpensive (12 GBP?) LS2 Monaro coils and the basic idea of the 1.8 coil pack wiring. I have put together a post on AudiWorld, summarizing the work to date. 450exc115 and lloyd21 have been working on this independently and are almost complete (waiting for some pins I believe).

Looks like a really potentially good solution to OE coils. Better than the 1.8t coil pack conversion (the coil packs still don't like heat).

Have a look at this and let me know what you think:

WOW - that should be a good coilpack alright... LS2 engine is a mighty machine. Good work - I'll get a look at this properly later in the week.

Apparently there is a white S2 in Poland (maybe a forum member here) that has/is running the very similar LS1 coils. Maybe somebody knows this car and can provide some insights:

Here are the LS1 coils (input and output on the same side):

Here is a link to one eBay price on 8 coils (I would do my homework on quality):

Wiring looks like about 6 GBP per coil (plus the 7A high tension leads and the Volvo connectors to mate with the Motronic harness).

You need to make your own loom, similar to the 1.8t conversion. The plugs for the coilpacks are available cheap enough on ebay.com

Have a look at this Audiworld thread... http://forums.audiworld.com/s4s6/msgs/231547.phtml

As Merlin's S4 suggested, at this point, you need to source you own parts:

I just bought six D585 "Yukon" coils and connectors (with pins and pigtails) for under $200 (under 100 GBP) total (follow this link):

            http://forums.audiworld.com/s4s6/msgs/231658.phtml

You also need the all important Volvo connectors:

            http://forums.audiworld.com/s4s6/msgs/205759.phtml

I have a 7A wire set (dizzy to sparkplugs) that I am going to trial. However, I recently found out that 3B wires can be ordered individually, so that MIGHT be a better way to go. (Or just make them from 7A/3B bits)

Here are some more wiring details:

            http://forums.audiworld.com/s4s6/msgs/231573.phtml

            Here is the basic information:

There are at least three of us in North America working on this. No reason why it won't work (AFAIK)

As a matter of curiousity, what is the PN on those "red" coils, 8DO ....115_?

Update on coil to plug wires for the LS2 coil conversion

I was considering using 7A or 3B wires but their diameter is a bit weak sauce. Today, I found a source of custom built 8.5 mm wires that would have the proper 7A/3B deep plug ends and LS2 coil ends.

                  See this link in AudiWorld:
