Heat shield for a cone filter?

Is there one you can buy, or do you have to make one yourself somehow?

Dahlback do a kit but really it's a make your own. George S2 Uk (or something like that) has done the best job I've seen. I've done the worst with some bacofoil... Works in the short term though.

Have you run a cone on there yet to see what it sounds like? Noise did my head in, there's all sorts of farting and hissing noises on part throttle from the DV, especailly when boosting aroundd atmospheric pressure on the gauge (no suprises there). My modded airbox sounds like a cone at full chat but it damps all the strange noises as described above and has reasonable heat shielding and cold air ducting...

IMO - the cone sounds horrible on a daily driver - they aren't 'nice' noises at part throttle and you get that chavtastic whoosh noise on every gear change... If thats your bag then go for it, but having tried both the Dahlback setup and RS2 airbox that I prefer the RS2 item. Its nicely shielded and has MUCH larger air intake that stock item. It definitely flows more air and there is a little extra noise at full chat on gearchanges - but its a nice noise ya know.

A big cone filter can be efficient if it truly is getting cold air feed, but as Andy says - some effort is needed for that on S2 for a really good installation with heat shields etc etc

Mine isnt a daily driver, 99% of driving in it is for pleasure and fun!
So to me, having some more noise isnt nessessarily a bad thing, especially as I am trying to get abit more feeling of speed and excitement into the car

I have'nt even bought a cone yet, Im just thinking aloud.
I certainly would'nt run one without some sort of shield and cold air feed.
Not too sure how I would make a shield though, as my DIY skills are somewhat crap!

get the cone on, make a cardboard template of the area to shield then cut the ali to shape, use a bit of rubber door seal to seal against the bonnet, wont take more than an hour or so

Cheaper to get a secondhand ABY box and cut it up a bit, I'm pleased with mine but and it adds greatly to the 'fun factor' and produces a great noise, better than a cone IMO.

If you want a cone then I suggest you borrow one from somewhere and see what you think, they don't sound nice unless you're at full boost... for a short period of time I've run just the MAF and the noise is the same, if you're a gambling man then give it a go .

The other things you should consider with a cone are 2 90degree 76mm Samco hoses, and a joiner or two. This reverses the cone direction and give better cold air feed. With a 3" pipe joining the bends and filter you can almost put the filter in the headlight and thus make the best use of the OE cold air feed although you might struggle to shield it that close the the MAF to turbo hose.

Finally, there are a few enclosed filters that you can get that solve most of the problems for you, heat shield and cold air feed are all there, I'd cut a hole in the inner wing and get my cold air from there if fitting one of these, a 3" or 4" flange welded to the inner wing and then sealed to teh filter would be perfect. BMC and ITG do them, sure others do too. Expect to pay about £200 for this setup new with the bends then add the inner wing mods on top...

              In summary:-

              Modified ABY 'box £40
              Cone filter £60
              Reversed cone filter £100+
Reversed & enclosed cone filter £200+

Rallydesign are the cheapesrt place I've found for Samcos BTW

dest, i've got a cone air filter if you want to try it

I did not mind the noises from the cone when I heard one fitted before, it was not too bad compared to what I thought it would be.

i recon the normal filter box is the way to go.. the cone fiter even faces the wrong way (untill you get a pipe made making the long intake even longer,.)

definately runs better on an airbox IMO. I ran a cone for years then changed back to the std 3b airbox and was blown away by thr improvement...uprating that to an ABY box improved a little bit more.

As i've said before, if you can insulate a cone properly then there are gains, without it you are pedaling backwards.....My aluminium heat shield was hot enough to cook an egg on whenever i touched it

andy - yup definately made slightly more noise and getting louder the longer its in, you can hear it spooling up quite nicely and sucking in the air.....

.....that was till the clutch started playing up and it still makes a nice noise in 1st gear as there is no slipping in that gear

@dest - for the sake of half hour, strip the box out and cut the front off.

And drill the cold side if you want a noise that's very close to a cone but without the unwelcome farting, hissing etc.
